Hi everyone!

I've got a simple tax question that's complicated to explain...

My wife came here to the US in Nov. 2015 on a K1 fiancee visa. I added her to my bank accounts in Dec. 2015 making it joint accounts. We got married in Jan. 2016 and therefore I (USC/petitioner) will be filling my 2015 taxes as Single.

I received my 2015 1099-INT from my bank with an interest income of about $30. Both of our names are on the 1099-INT because they are joint accounts, however only my SSN/Taxpayer ID Number is on it because my fiancee got her SSN after adding her to my bank accounts and we haven't got back yet to add her SSN to the accounts. I will obviously claim the whole 2015 1099-INT with my 2015 taxes.

My question is will my wife have to file 2015 taxes based on her name being on the 1099-INT? I'd assume not since her SSN/Taxpayer ID Number is not on the accounts or on the 1099-INT? That and that she was added to my accounts in Dec. 2015 means she would've only technically earned less than $1 in interest income?

Thanks again everyone! Whew...one less 2015 tax return to worry about haha.


No she is not required to file, you can file as MFS; although, it would likely be financially advantageous for you to file as MFJ.

We will be filing as MFJ for 2016 to get that marriage bonus :)
