Hello gang,

Well here is the latest, just over 1 month and I will be in Thailand for my Thai traditional wedding on the 18 April. I am looking forward to this new and exciting experience in my life, getting married in another country. Although not a legal marriage in the U.S. it sure means alot to her family and everyone in her village. I guess I am a little nervous as I will be the only foreigner there and not knowing but 1 Laos (everyone in the village speaks Laos only because it is so close to Laos)sentence and no one but my bride the only one knowing any English. Their village has never experienced a foreigner visit before and my picture has been plastered all over the place, i kinda feel as though it is a wanted poster. Pudum's father has made 2 red couches for my visit, one for me since I "can't sit like Thai people" and one for visitors to sit and talk to me. Well I can tell you one thing I will not be nodding my head yes to anything said at this wedding as I can just imagine what trouble I could easily get myself into by saying yes. I can't get a herd of water buffalo back to America, so no head movement at all.

Can anyone share their experiences with me? I am excited and thrilled. Now I just got to store enough energy and power to wear a silk outfit all day without sweating to death.

Thanks for reading.

Ken

That reminds me of whenever Dan was here. Some of my neighbor sometimes came over to see how he looks like. It's not like everyday the neighborhood got a foreign visitor.

And your picture has been plastered all over the place ? oh wow. They're so excited to have you there. Don't be so nervous and good luck !

Congrats. But be careful about having a wedding there since you are doing a K1. There have been times when there have been ceremonies that were not legally binding and the visa has been denied as a result. Be careful, but most of all have fun.

Your best bet is to ask questions of the "Child Bridegroom", Matt85 as he recently experienced the same. I know he won't mind me "throwing him under the bus."... :)

YMMV

Good luck and congrats Ken,

Make sure the two of you do not wear your rings entering the USA. Also, do not bring any photos or camera shots of the wedding while going through immagration.

I did the same with my wife, and had no problem.

Just remember to be humble to all in her village. Try to learn a few important words in her native language to prove to her family you are at least trying.

During the ceremony do your best to sit as they do, not on the couch. you can adjust your legs as they give out from kneeling in different ways, watch the elders in her village and sit as they do.

On the dowry part, I had a very high amount requested by her father, which was negotiated in half ( to prove myself) Yes, even that was a test. It was a very important part of the wedding. Later on,,, after the whole party was over,, the father gave the dowry back to us to help start our new life together! I was blown away at this kind gesture! I wanted to say no! I cant accept it! But was told by my bride it would be rude not to take it back. Wow! Anyway, you are not supposed to know about that part, and is entirely up to the father to do such a kind thing.

I am currently in thailand for the next few weeks with my wife visiting my new family once again. as part of the agreement between her father and I , I am to return every year for a visit with him. Keeping your word is much more important than anything to the family.

good luck,

meandwi

Ken,

Find a copy of the book Thai Ways, by Denis Segallar. It's getting a bit old, but is still meaningful and should be especially so in the village situation that you describe.

And be sure to have several 100 baht notes handy in your pocket. My wife assured me before our wedding that I wouldn't need them, but her sister, aunt, and other family members had different ideas as I tied to approach the wedding place.

Nice. We just had a huge party near Ubon Ratchathani in January. I know how Elvis feels now.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Hey Ken,

Congratulations on your journey and on you wedding ceremony in April. It is an exciting expereince no matter what difficulties that you may encounter with language barriers. My recommendation is for you to buy an electronic translator. The price varies depending on the capability of the device. I have a Russian fiancee. I have purchased both a computer software translation program and an electronic translation device. Both applications are a training/instructional device as well as words, sentences, and phrases translation for English-Russian and Russian-English language. You can go to www.ectaco.com or any other website that offers these applications.

By the way, my petition for fiancee visa was approved 15 Mar 07. It is now sent to the NVC so they can forward it to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Russia. If all goes well I am hoping to be married by the end of April or beginning of May. We are planning on have a Russian wedding and an American wedding. I have seen a Russian wedding before so it won't be too bad for me. Another suggestion is for you to go online goggle Thai weddings and read about the ceremony. I did

that to learn about my soon to be Russian experience.

Take care,

Basil
