We all know the stats, we all have opinions on them. Most people consider the stats on capital punishment fairly damning. But aside from them, in my opinion I've the essential idea that a state should never, except in times of defense of its people, be granted the power to kill. At times imprisonment is necessary, capital punishment is not. But it's a wedge issue anyway. Few people are killed. I'm vehemently against it, but it doesn't affect a ton of people. Mandatory minimums do and they are egregious.

It is also much more expensive to kill someone than to keep them locked up for life due to the cost in money and resources that are guaranteed to those on death row for near endless appeals.
