I am in the process of pulling together all the necessary documents for my I751. So far I have :

- Joint tax filing for the last two years

- Birth Certificate of our son

- Medical records showing us as parents

- utility bills with both our names

- Insurance with both our names

- bank account with both our names

- Life insurance with our names

- Car note with both our names

- photos of our vacations together

-Cards for birthdays, anniversaries and holidays from each other

Do I still need to provide sworn affidavits from friends/family? I am reading in several places that this is not necessary but the official documents from USCIS states that we can include this? Is ' CAN' the operative word here?

Appreciate any input.

You don't need/have to provide with affidavits but you CAN do it.

Try to send the following if possible;

Power of attorney

Life insurance

Joint phone bill

Wills

Joint leases/mortgage

You need to send monthly statements for the joint bank account. Also send any joint credit cards.

Basically the most important type of documents is the ones showing financial co-mingling.

You can include the joint lease, it's very good actually. You need to show not only recent proofs, but proofs throughout your marriage since your spouse arrived to the US. You can also include photocopies of your driving licenses to show that you have same legal address.

A power of attorney is a legal document that gives someone you choose the power to act in your place. In case you ever become mentally incapacitated, you'll need what are known as "durable" powers of attorney for medical care and finances.
