It takes about a year to go through the citizenship process.

Apply for citizenship is optional and that's why some people choose to wait 10 years, 15 years, etc. to naturalize.

The law has not changed in decades.

I'd disagree, it should not take about a year. Even with a very busy local office (Dallas, TX) it took me a tiny bit over 8 months. Less busy local offices may get it done in 6 months.

From the day I became a LPR (in OP's case this will be POE with the immigrant visa) to the day I became a USC the time elapsed was about 3 and a half years. (Partly thanks to the provision of being able to file 90 days before the full 3 years as LPR are up.)

If you are missionaries is there any way during your sabbatical that you could work for the organization from the USA somehow? An r1 would be possible then.
