There is no certain number of years.

The I-864 obligation ends when certain conditions are met. Read page 8 of the I-864.

He can be the Sponsor or Joint Sponsor for another case if he has the required income and/or assets. If he has current I-864 obligations, then he includes those people in his household size.

It does not vary from state to state. Immigration is a federal matter. The states have nothing to do with it.

Stop listening to "someone." He or she is completely wrong.

It is my personal understanding that you the petitioner can be held responsible for just about anything...., until your gal gets her citizenship. It is my understanding that your obligation(s) will end at this time. Others may disagree with me. I only ask they offer an example of their opinion.

Best of luck!

You're wrong. The Sponsor is only held responsible if the immigrant receives certain means tested benefits. It's not "just about anything." Read the I-864.

Read page 8 of the I-864 for when the Sponsor and Joint Sponsor's obligation ends. Plenty of examples there.

The person has either worked and earned 40 Social Security credits or can be credited with those from parents or a spouse.

It is 10 years only is the single person is working at a social security recognized job making at least a certain amount of money. If the sponsored immigrant doesn't work. works "under the table" or fails to meet the required income for any quarter the time could be infinite.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
