Help with joint bank account

Hi everyone. Today my husband and I went to the bank to try to make a joint bank account, but they told us that they could not put my name because I don't have an American ID with my new address on. I cannot have an American ID until the process starts, right?!
Sorry for the stupid question, but we're just very confused.

Every bank is different, however in general there should be no issue adding your spouse to a bank account or opening one together. Do you have your SSN yet? All our bank required was our marriage certificate and whatever ID my husband could provide (passport). They may at times request an SSN, depending on the bank.

Sorry, but it seems like the more we do researches, the more people tell us completely opposite things lol

Again you do not need an ''American ID'' to open a bank account. You have an SSN, your SSN is yours for life, regardless of what status you have. A foreign passport can be used, your SSN can be used, and most importantly your marriage certificate can be used. Get yourself a copy of your certificate head down to the bank again and request a supervisor. If not, try a different bank that actually wants your business. There will be forms for both of you to sign.

An ''American ID card'' operates under individual state law, usually issued by a DMV in the same way driver's licenses are. These are usually not given to immigrants unless they have adjusted their status and have received an EAD or some other documentation. So waiting for such an ''ID'' would take a long amount of time, and is silly. If you haven't already started, you should try and start the adjustment of status process soon, so you can at least have those things for the future.

get a new bank. I opened a joint account with my wife from Uzbekistan 1 year before she ever entered the US. She didn't even have a SSN at that point. Banks take foreign investment money the same as they take ours. Had to complete some additional forms.

Yeah, I actually tried to tell him to get a new bank, but the fact is that he has a lease for his car in this bank. So he doesn't really wanna open a new account somewhere else. Do you think that if we have 2 bank accounts, but only one is joint, they're gonna give us hard time?!

I have accounts in 5 different banks. Chase, BofA, USAA, MassMutual, Fidelity. It make no difference to the USCIS or your bank. My opinion is that the teller at the bank your husband banks at is simply clueless. I would ask to talk to the branch manager. Tell them you are a foreigner with a pending green card, they will add you on with your passport.
