SSN: Did we apply for manual verification??

Hello everyone

This is mainly a question to those of you that have already applied/received a SSN card. My fiancé and I went to apply for a card the 18th of February and we just now realized that we might have unknowingly requested them to manual verify if we are in the system (even though the officer didn't mention any of it). We went there and he requested for our information and gave us a piece of paper at the end with my reference number saying "...before we can issue you a social security number card, we must verify the documents you gave us to show your aliens status with the federal state..." And "... If the office verifies the authenticity of your documents we will mail you a social security number card..." Did we unknowingly agree to get a manual verification? :/

We got the same letter from the Social Security office when my spouse applied for his card. We got the card five calendar days later in the mail, so whatever verification they do was very fast for us.

We got the letter because the SS agent needed to verify my fiance's name with Homeland since it is so long--we have been waiting almost 5 weeks and still no card and nothing known by the SSA.

Hi,

I got the same letter too. I applied Feb 11th and up to now, I still don't have the card neither SSN # available. I called SSA last week, I was told they have not received any response from DHS yet! I've been waiting for almost a month now. :(

From the replies it seems like I unintentionally applied for manual verification.. Ugh. I shouldn't have any problems so that is the only reason I can come up with as to why I still have not received my card and my case status is in "pending" :/

I went in to apply for my SSN on Feb 27th, and it turns out DHS had my middle name as part of my first name, so the lady we were dealing with sent a request to change the name. Said it should take 2 weeks to get a final receipt of application then a week or so after that to receive my card, but the paper she gave me said it can take up to 4 weeks. Called into the local office and guy said it'd take up to 6-8 weeks!!! This is so frustrating!

Anyone have any updates for their cards?

Applied February 18th and still nothing. I've been calling every week and at first the lady said it could take up to 40 day.. Called two weeks later and she said it could take up to 6-8 weeks.. They keep giving different information and I'm just surprised it can take them 40 days to send a photocopy (which is what they need to do).. If I were to take 40 days for every photocopy I'd be 5 years behind! But I guess we can do nothing but wait :)

Applied for my SSN on February 16, the Lady gave me a paper with my info and reference number telling me it could take 12 weeks. She said they will need to verify with DHS before a number can be issued. Last week, I called and requested for a follow up. The lady told me there seems to be a problem, my middle name was added as part of my first name by DHS . I decided to call again today, behold good news. The number was issued on Friday. Going to my local office tomorrow to get my ssn while I wait for the card to arrive in mail

Yeah I had the same problem! I submitted my application about a week and a half after yours, so hopefully I'll hear something soon. How exactly did you ask about your case? Did you give them your reference number? I called my local office before and the guy just gave me a generic answer to wait longer without giving me a chance to give my reference number.

Ya I told the CSR how long I've been waiting and gave her my ref. no and demanded for updates I also asked for the last time a follow up was done on my case and she checked through the computer and told me the date , 2 days later I called back and confirmed a number has been assigned. So, I guess calling them and asking for a specific info helps a lot. All the we will all get through.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had same situation.. Applied for name change ages ago.. They say it will take up to 4 weeks to check.. After 2 months of waiting, I decided not to bother with calling, just go to the SS office again (with the first letter again). The clerk was quite moody.. Said like you need to do it again, though he said in the system application already done, so someone just didn't send it or it was lost in mail ( I didn't know what happened). Now he done same thing again, and said wait for 2 weeks.. Still waiting :) and he was trying to convince me that my name not changed in the immigration system.. Interesting how if I have GC with new name, and their system let change my surname too (what would be impossible if it won't be changed in immigration system ) .

What number did you call? When we call our local agency, the same agent tells us to wait 4-8 weeks and hangs up.

Same thing happened to us but no one is telling us of a status.

I tried calling multiple times but the people that work at the agency can't do much more than check on their computer screens and tell you if your SSN ahs been issued or not. We were getting really frustrated and decided to go in person back to the office and found out our SSN had been issued the same day (even though the day before we were told it could take weeks still) so I'd suggest going there in person. Face to face is a lot more useful than over the phone :)

Thank you! We actually went yesterday and was told to wait 2 more weeks. She explained it was due to his long name. They must have made a mistake inputting the information and needed a longer time to verify. I just hope when we go back in 2 weeks, they won't tell us the same story. It's been 2 months! We know people who received their social in 1.5 weeks. ?
