Good morning everyone,

Yes I have seen this topic come up time and time again but I thought I would bring it up one more time! NOA1 was received in our mail box this past Saturday. Of course the standard statement of extension of one year. The way I read it this means the original expiration date on the two year conditional green card will be extended one year. I read a post a few weeks ago where someone called USCIS and they were told the extension is one year from the NOA1 date. Yes I fully understand you have to be careful with what someone on the phone at USCIS says as that cannot always be taken to the bank. I have read posts where people went to their state driver's license office to get their license renewed/extended for one year based on the NOA1. Some people stated their license was extended one year from the original expiration date of the two year conditional green card and some one year from the date on the NOA1. Again someone at the state driver's license office with their interpretation, Yes my wife is going this week to get her driver's license renewed/extended. With the ROC taking almost a year we do not want to run into a situation where my wife's driver's license is about to expire and we have not received the 10 year green card.

Does anyone have any concrete proof that my wife can take to the driver's license office to hopefully show them her green card expiration date has been extended one year? Of course she will bring her green card and NOA1 but we will be at the mercy of someone at the driver's license office and their interpretation. Somewhat scary!

Or maybe someone might post that I am incorrect and the date of the NOA1 is what is extended one year.

Thanks in advance for reading this post and any comments you might have.

God bless

Good morning everyone,

Yes I have seen this topic come up time and time again but I thought I would bring it up one more time! And will likely come up again, and again...... NOA1 was received in our mail box this past Saturday. Of course the standard statement of extension of one year. The way I read it this means the original expiration date on the two year conditional green card will be extended one year. Could be interpreted either way, literal or figurative. I read a post a few weeks ago where someone called USCIS and they were told the extension is one year from the NOA1 date. I have also read those comments before. Yes I fully understand you have to be careful with what someone on the phone at USCIS says as that cannot always be taken to the bank. So true. I have read posts where people went to their state driver's license office to get their license renewed/extended for one year based on the NOA1. Yep. Some people stated their license was extended one year from the original expiration date of the two year conditional green card and some one year from the date on the NOA1. Yep. Again someone at the state driver's license office with their interpretation, So true. Yes my wife is going this week to get her driver's license renewed/extended. With the ROC taking almost a year we do not want to run into a situation where my wife's driver's license is about to expire and we have not received the 10 year green card. An issue faced by many, many folks similarly situated as yourself and your wife.

Does anyone have any concrete proof that my wife can take to the driver's license office to hopefully show them her green card expiration date has been extended one year? Good luck, I have seen the discussion come down to six of one, and half a dozen of the other. The NOA1 receipt/extension letter. Of course she will bring her green card and NOA1 but we will be at the mercy of someone at the driver's license office and their interpretation. Somewhat scary! Sure, more bureaucrats, and State ones at that.

Or maybe someone might post that I am incorrect and the date of the NOA1 is what is extended one year. Take a cruise through the AFM Chapter 25 and see what conclusion you come up with: https://www.uscis.gov/iframe/ilink/docView/AFM/HTML/AFM/0-0-0-1/0-0-0-11685.html It is as concrete as quicksand.

Thanks in advance for reading this post and any comments you might have.

God bless

You have already stated the obvious issues that have been a constant source of discussion at this forum, and as you may have inadvertently pointed out, it all depends on the rules and regulations of the particular state where you reside, and the interpretation of those rules and regulations by the individual licensing examiner.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Does anyone have any concrete proof that my wife can take to the driver's license office to hopefully show them her green card expiration date has been extended one year? No, but I do have a block of concrete you can bash yourself over the head with since the answer to this questions seems to be "it depends". Some DMV employees in some offices in some states accept the extension letter while some don't. Even within the same office. Why every employee isn't equally educated on this all-too-common immigration procedure? Well, if they were, we wouldn't have the "luxury" of complaining about then, I guess" :P Of course she will bring her green card and NOA1 but we will be at the mercy of someone at the driver's license office and their interpretation. Somewhat scary!

Or maybe someone might post that I am incorrect and the date of the NOA1 is what is extended one year.

Thanks for your reply. News flash: Wife went to the Georgia driver's license office yesterday to renew her license. Original license was issued two years ago when she received her conditional green card. Mind you my wife has been here for years as she is an accountant and was here on her TN visa...that is how we met years ago. Anyway her license has an expiration date of 4/4/16 which is the same expiration date as her conditional green card. Official at the driver's license office took one look at her green card, looked at the NOA1 and gave her a new driver's license with an expiration date of 4/4/17. We thanked God.

God Bless

This will be a fun hoop my husband will soon have to jump through. He has a US driver's license, a Costa Rican driver's license, and because he travels so much an international driver's license. I wonder if they don't renew the US license/don't renew it to the GC date, could he technically use his CR license and his international license to drive in the USA??

I'm from Tx and when I got my dl they gave it to me for 5 years on my 2 year conditional gc.

I really don't know if is like that for every body tho. I thought it was a mistake.

I recently went to change the address on my dl and they didn't ask me for anything .

I'm in Texas too and my DL is valid for the max 6 years even though I only had my 2 year conditional green card when I applied.

It seems to vary a lot.

I am in Chicago, IL and tried to take the written test to get a permit yesterday and was rejected because they would not accept my extension letter. I am currently rethinking my strategy. They suggested I drive on my foreign license even when I pointed out that would be illegal as I have been a resident of the city for more than 90 days. I hope to get something sorted as I want to buy a car, but can only imagine that it will be 100 times more complicated with a foreign license and the insurance will probably be insane because I do not have a state issued license.
