Hi All,

It has been a while since I have posted on here as I moved out to America in November! We are now going through the process of adjusting my status and I want to also submit a travel document so I am able to go home whilst I am adjusting.. Now I've seen somewhere that this fee is $300+ for the travel document, but I am CERTAIN that I saw someone post on here that if I submitted the form along with my AOS paperwork and the one time payment of $1,070 then the travel document and work permit would be free? Is this true? Someone please help D:

Thanks!

All answers correct.

In addition, make sure there is a cover letter stating AP & EAD are FREE OR WAIVED.

Like they are separated to different departments once they receive the single package.

So you're saying create two cover letters, one each for AP & EAD? Also where do I find a statement that the AP & EAD are free or waived?

Yes, cover letter for each.

Check under the section for PAYMENT in the AP/EAD instructions documents you read before filling your AP & EAD.

EM_Vandaveer: If u say its not necessary, may be. But i speak based on who i ve seen rejected even though he paid $1070. It doesn't hurt to have a cover though.

There is no need in general for a cover letter detailing the need for the fee to be waived. We certainly included a cover letter, but that was to detail the entire contents of the package sent in.

What you need to do is follow the guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

Just because you apply for AOS doesn't mean your travel document is automatically issued. You need to also include the forms and proofs that go along with it and your full check for $1,070. If the forms are sent in with the main AOS paperwork the additional fees are waived. You'll get a biometrics appointment some time after filing, and usually within 90 days or so you'll receive your EAD/AP.

You are correct, there is no additional fee. You can find the fee waiver information in the I-765 instructions, page 10 (https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-765instr.pdf) and also

in the I-131 instructions, page 10 (https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-131instr.pdf).

There is no need to indicate on your cover letter that the EAD and AP fees are waived.

A cover letter is not required. The cover letter is only there to help you keep your packet organized. As such, you can choose to include ONE cover letter for all 3 packets, or THREE individual cover letters. This is really a matter of preference and in what helps you keep the packet organized.

Do not forget that you will receive a combo card first. You will then receive the two year conditional green card. During the time my wife had the combo card we traveled back to Mexico City. We ran into a small issue when we were leaving Atlanta for our non stop flight to Mexico City. The airline ticket agent had never seen or heard about a combo card and was not going to check us in for our flight. I had to explain what a combo card is and after they made a phone call we were checked in and on our flight. Before we left on our flight I was on the phone with the airline and got the station agents name at the airport in Mexico City and confirmed they were fully aware of what a combo card was as we did not want any issues on our flight back to Atlanta.

You might want to give your airline a call to confirm they know what a combo card is. It never hurts to record their name and phone number just in case. I read a post on Visa Journey a few years ago where someone was overseas and they were flying back to the US and the airline refused to let the person on the plane with the combo card. The person got the issue resolved a number of hours later with the airline but the flight had already left. Not a good place to be.
