A street near where I live voted to have a water line installed on their street and have it hooked up to a town water system. Everyone is on well water now. The cost was 10,000 per house and like 1500 to hook it from the road to the home Folks on that street had to foot the bill and the water line would be the property of the town . . No one from the federal government said we will pay for that water line . It is a community situation . It should be solved at the local level. Instead of putting in transgender bathrooms in all the schools try solving real problems . ... Like installing new water lines a certain percentage a year over the last 10-15 years. . Democrats squander time ,money ,and resources . This is just a prime example .

Why not when they can poison a bunch of people by fracking up the city water supply then attach their lips to a teat in Washington, get it fixed, and walk away unscathed. If a private company violates regulations this badly someone goes to jail. If an elected Democrat does it they throw their hands up, look stupid, blame someone else, and wait for it to be fixed for them by St Taxpayer and his reindeer sleigh.

This is definitely a snowball waiting to happen. How many cities have aging infrastructures that will cause their elected officials to start knocking on Washington's door to pay for replacement if Flint gets federal funding? I agree, this is a local issue, that is why water boards, and waterworks employees are municipal and not federal.

18 percent of the cost of buildings maintenance of all water systems comes from a federal program that is administered by the states. Even private utilities benefit from this support. If you feel guilty about taking that money calculate 13 percent of your water bill and send it to the treasury and 5percent and send it to the state

The EPA took over the regulation of water discharge and consumption in the 70 s after the public outcry from the 1969 Cuyahoga river catching fire. Local and private groups we failing.

The children at risk in Flint did not make these decisions. They deserve clean water and not lead poisoning. If you have another solution please put it forward. This is a no brainer and time is not our friend. It is time for this lame_azz congress to get off their backsides and do their job.

Solution: reconnect to the detroit system, flush it out, and get back to business. Duh dude seriously?

Administered by the states? Thats what I said.

This particular system was permitted by the MDEQ and the EPA has never, anywhere, been responsible for the operation of a water treatment facility. You need to get your facts straight.

You are putting yourself as educated on this issue, but you are missing the core facts. That will not work now that the corrosion has started.

Accountability is with the EPA , responsible for operating is local. If the source of water is unhealthy or the discharge is outside of federal standards, the EPA is accountable to force remediation. If you were following the details of the story you would be aware that the Fed's failed in their duties

Would you at least look before you make stupid statements? Again: This. Is. Not. A. Federal. Issue. Good god already. The state is responsible for compliance of local systems to drinking water standards and if they dont comply they are responsible for fixing the deficiencies.

EPA says Flint water plant short-handed, changes needed

Todd Spangler, Detroit Free Press

WASHINGTON The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Friday chastised the state and city of Flint for not doing more to address its concerns over water quality and high lead levels found in residents' taps, specifically calling them out for Flint's not having more qualified personnel operating its much-maligned public water system.

Following up on the EPA's emergency order of Jan. 21, water enforcement division Director Mark Pollins wrote state and city officials on Friday, saying that while they have taken some appropriate actions, there continued to be "significant issues that need immediate attention," including staffing levels at the Flint water treatment plant. He also said there needs to be a comprehensive plan to ensure corrosion treatments are adequate to keep lead from leaching from old water lines.

Water quality standards are set by the EPA, state agencies permit to those (and sometimes tighter) standards, and operators are required to meet permitted limits. The EPA does not, however, directly enforce or even monitor the state permit or the site however they can fine the operator and the state for violating federal standards.

The compliance and monitoring results from an operating site are filed with the state on a periodic basis that is set up in the permit. Sometimes monthly, sometimes quarterly.

“What’s really happening here is that Washington politicians are using the crisis in Flint as an excuse to funnel taxpayer money to their own home states, and trying to sneak it through the Senate without proper debate and amendment,” he said. “I respectfully object.”

Well some senator is not getting a Christmas card next year!

The Flint water issue is the states responsibility.. In 2011 Michigan had a 1.3 billion deficit, this year they are projected to have a 940 million surplus. Seems they could put a chunk of that into the infrastructure that they are responsible for maintaining... I am glad Congress found time in its busy schedule of not working on immigration reform and pledging to do nothing on any supreme court nominee to vote some money out for stuff that they have no business getting involved in.

EPA was responsible for poisoning a river running through SW Colorado last year, still awaiting to see the prosecutions.

I was speaking to a guy who works for a Consultancy that has a lot of EPA work, the waste is unbelievable.

Local town had a similar situation on a smaller scale, basically Politicians, Republicans, not doing what they should have, increased the water rates substantially, perhaps they should have got the Feds to bail them out? Can it be done retrospectively?

Just wondering how many people where employed for public water systems using AA? Can you post the records please? Include their qualifications or lack of qualifications. I want to judge those AA users accordingly

I would imagine Flint put the through the shredder.
