Incest: an age-old taboo

God, what a mess of a thread.

Couple quick points:

1) Being tolerant or even supportive of gay people doesn't imply no moral standards at all, or no belief in judgment. It just implies a disagreement over where the line between acceptable and unacceptable behavior is.

2) Historically, the incest taboo runs a lot deeper than the taboo against homosexuality. Not that that matters all that much.

3) There is a very significant risk of genetic diseases. Heck, you get this even with cousins intermarrying. Too many recessive genes hopping around madly.

4) You know what? If you live in a big city? Total lack of people coming up telling your children to be gay.

Also, Greece didn't fall because of being gay. Unless by "fall" you mean "repulsed the Persians (n.b. for those who get their history from the movies: Athens's navy was very important in smacking Xerxes back)", "conquered the known world", "invented a tradition of philosophy that lasts till the present day."

The Greeks lost to the Romans not because they were too busy painting their nails to put together an army, but because (for some value of "because") the city-state + alliance mode wasn't strong enough to defeat a very well organized Roman republic.

Also partly due to the succession wars following the death of Alexander.

The only pamphlets that people have tried to dump at my house thus far are those pesky Watchtowers. I didn't think those where gay people bringing them by.

I've never had the pleasure of receiving a Watchtower brochure. :P

Ok, I'm with you then, I'm pretty sure they're not gay.

Lucky you. They have a Kindom Hall less than half a mile from my house. I think I'll head on over there during Halloween just so they know what it's like...

It was never alleged that any civilization fell because of gays. Hedonism was the term used. There are substructural reasons why they could not get their act together, but that is usually emphaiszed by social anthos and historians, not straight historians.

I noticed no asking for proof was required for comments made countering the hedonism theory. They're simply accepted as fact.

When we lived in our first place in California (back when I was waiting for my AOS & EAD), I had a couple of those people show up on my doorstep – 2 leaflet-armed women in Sunday dresses (the dresses that young girls are forced to wear to attend church). They seemed strangely insistent on getting into my apartment and “helping me” with domestic stuff. They don’t seem to want to take no for an answer either – it was very awkward.

I think Rab C. Nesbitt (character in an old BBC sitcom of the same name) had the best idea for scaring them off – opening the door bare naked and wielding a butcher knife ;)
