Over the course of our relationship, we once went that long if not a little longer without seeing each other physically. Money and real world happens. That being said, the son or fiancé had better sort this out if they want a successful application.

They also should be spending their visit making sure they have evidence that they met each other during this time too.

It does seem a bit odd especially since UK-->USA is very close, and a VWP country. Also, the son's father is a USC:/ that makes it even odder.

Hmm, I remember reading or seeing a video where the meeting had to take place in the foreign country, but checking USCIS and state dept websites, I am not seeing this particular requirement. In your situation, I would want to make certain that a meeting in the U.S. would suffice, however.
