Hi everyone, I got married one year ago to someone from the US and have the marriage green card. I am wondering when exactly I need to remove the conditions on this and the quickest way to citizenship? In a couple of months, I want to go and travel Asia for 6-9 months and so I need to know how long I can be absent from the US and still proceed with the removal of conditions and apply for citizenship.

Thank you! How long can I spend out of the US with my current PR status and also when conditions of PR are removed?

I'm pretty sure six months is the longest that could be different when your conditional

With a reentry permit you can stay out for up to 2 years, however when you're removing the conditions on your green card this isn't advisable. This is because you need to do biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and also you may be requested to provide more evidence AND you may be requested for an interview. All of which you must do as/if required. Your NOA1 only extends your LPR status for 1 year at a time. Also any stay over 180 days out of the country affects your citizenship application timeline.


In all honesty, this is NOT a good time to be spending 9 months outside of the US. Wait until you're a citizen IMHO.


Also that citizenship timeline is based on 3 years of marriage and LPR residence to the petitioner. If you are divorced you will need to wait for 5 years unless it was a VAWA case.

BOTH. In order to apply for citizenship, one has to be married to a USC for 3 years minus 90 days AND be a LPR for 3 years minus 90 days.

Permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 3 years.
