Travelling Outside US with an Expired J-2 Passport Visa

Hi all,

I am a J-2 dependent visa holder. My passport visa has expired but I have a valid DS-2019 and also a EAD and therefore I am allowed to live and work in the US. However I need to travel to Brazil for business but I will not be able to re-enter the US as the visa in my passport has expired, even though I have a valid DS-2019. Is there any alternative to travel outside the US without having to go to Italy (my wife is Italian) to renew her J-1 Visa?

Maybe one of this two alternatives would work?

- travel first to either Canada, Mexico and Caribbean and then to Brazil and on the way back do the same?

- Re-enter the US with a tourist visa? But in this case wouldn't I loose the J-2 status and therefore be denied the right to work in the US?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

There is a possibility that the US consulate in Brazil may be able to renew your J2 visa but, you should contact the embassy there to confirm.

- This is possible if it's less than 30 days.

- Yes, you would lose work authorization since you would be in the US on a B1/B2 visa.

Agree see if you can renew in Brazil.

Thank you both for your answers. I don't think I or rather my wife can renew it in an US consulate. What we have been told is that the visa has to be renewed in the place where she had residency before moving to the US, which is in Italy I don't think my wife can renew her Visa anywhere else rather than in Italy. Either way she would have to travel with me and in the eventuality that she can renew it in Brazil we might not be able to stay there the time that the whole process might take.

Looks like I will not be able to travel for now....

People renew non immigrant visa's at other Consulates. Your situation, well may be something specific.
