Is there a point to filing AP/EAD anymore?

We filed my OAS back in January, got the NOA 1 on January 21. I've been chomping at the bit ever since so I can go back to Canada and visit my family. We were just notified of my AOS interview on March 31. I've checked the USCIS site for updates on my AP/EAD card and there's been nothing since the notification for my biometrics back in February.

Granted I'm thrilled about the interview and possibly being approved but it doesn't seem worthwhile saving just a few weeks between maybe getting the combo card and getting the green card. Was there a time where the combo card came sooner?

When we filed for my wife's AOS back in December of 2011, we filed for the EAD/AP card as well, but the process went so fast that she got her green card before the EAD/AP card was issued. It took only 3 months from the filing date until the green card arrived. She had her interview the first week of March and the green card arrived about 2 weeks later.

I know there are many other folks who have much longer timelines for various reasons, but Canadians do seem to have an easier go of it for the most part.

OK so the actual green card gets back to you in about 2 weeks after the interview. Hopefully I can get 1 or 2 uses from the combo card if/when it gets here.

We filed AOS the day after my POE. It took the full 3 months to get my EAD/AP card. We didn't get our interview for almost a year... where I was beginning to worry whether I should re-new my EAD/AP. We luckily got notice of our interview, but we had issues with my biometrics (had to go in twice to do it). Then when we finally got our interview, our package wasn't at the office. So we did our interview but had to wait. We got my green card just after a month after our interview.

46 days for the EAD/AP and 89 days for the GC for us. So 5 weeks before the GC may not seem lie much, but if a family emergency happened to pop up, she could at least travel.

I'm only 2.5 hours drive away from my family in Canada. The second I get what I need to get there I'll be there.

Yes, at times in the past, EAD/AP came faster (and other times, took longer). Regardless though, your interview date depends on your local office. Some offices are quick to interview (2-3 months) while others can take over a year to get a date. We had to wait 8 1/2 months for an interview in Seattle. So for anyone who is at an office with a longer wait time or the people who get NPIW, yes, there is a point to filing for an EAD/AP.
