Based on this post, the time remaining till expiry on Brit passports (unlike Canuck where the applicant gets shafted of it--and only gets the 5 years of the new one) is tacked on to the "regular" 10-year term

As of May 2007 the fee for making changes to a passport is $205!!!! $220 with postage. I've only just sent in my AOS but thought I'd look up what i'll need to do to get a new passport with my name change. It's 66 pounds back home to do the same thing. Oh well. Have to save up for when that time comes.

I have a couple of passport questions. I am a British citizen living in Indiana. I need to renew my passport - it expired on August 8th. Do I need to get the form and photo countersigned for a renewal? What kind of documentation do I need to produce for renewals? The only difference to my circumstances since my last passport is that I am now married.

If its just a basic renewal then no, you don't need the application countersigned. I think that's only really a problem if you've changed your name (i.e. through marriage) or lost your original passport. Then the challenge becomes finding someone, who isn't a member of your family who has known you for at least 2 years.

Passport arrived within 2 weeks of my sending in the application. Lot quicker than it would have been back in the UK - guess there's an upside to the exorbitant application fee.

When I renewed my UK Passport I called the embassy about getting the photo's countersigned as I had only been in the US for 5 months there was nobody that had known me for more than 2 years... I was told that I could get my lawyer or doctor to countersign.. I had my lawyer do it and had no problems getting my new passport in my married name...

Is it safe to assume that I don't need countersignatures then? And, if so, is it also safe to assume that I don't need to send in ID evidence such as birth certificates, etc.?

Another question springs to mind: Do I need to produce a marriage certificate - or copy - to prove that I am now of married status?

Just a quick question, my passport has 4 yrs left before it expires (in maiden name) now applying for new passport with married name, my question is, when I get the new one will it be for a full 10 yrs or for the 4 I have left??

I went to washington to get my passport, they check everything right then and a couple of days later I got my passport delivered via fedex. Very painless procedure, I was the only one in the place!

Just so you know, if you fly with American Airlines to/from London, you can use your old passport in your maiden name if you want. The key thing is to take your original marriage certificate (or an official copy) and hand it over along with your ticket and passport at every inspection point.

I had to buy a new passport a couple of months before I left for the States in 2005 so now I have one in my maiden name that is valid until 2015 ... I changed my name on my AA mileage account soon after getting married, but I'm a cheapskate so I decided to try to hang on to my new old passport for as long as possible.

I've booked and flown on American three times since marrying - each time using a ticket booked in my married name. At DFW, Gatwick and Heathrow airports, the initial pre-check-in security processing took a couple of minutes longer than normal while the security staff checked the green card, the ticket and the passport against the marriage certificate to confirm both my names were there and I was me ... and added a note into the computer system. (I've been a useful training exercise a couple of times while junior checkers were shown what to do with me and my paperwork!) After that, the actual check in itself has been totally normal because all the details were already in the system.

I flew to London and back with AA this January, again using my married name with no problems, even though the US has changed its passport/ID rules.

Obviously I can't comment on what all the other airlines do ... And your experience and mileage may of course vary ...

However, as long as the US or UK don't change the rules again, and while AA sticks with its common sense approach to this issue (and I stick with them for the airmiles) ... I've got no intention of forking out such a ludicrous amount of money for no good reason.

Fees are up again... $265..... how long does it take to receive a new passport once the application has been mailed?

I got mine a month or so back. Fast turnaround. Got it about 10 days after I sent the application off. Horribly expensive but they have you over a barrel! US passports are much cheaper but they take forever. My wife got one and it took something like 3 months.

My British passport is up in March 2009, I'm a permenant resident of the US now just on my lil break from paperwork till I have to apply to lift conditions. This thread was very helpful but I just wondered how much in advance you'd recommend I apply to renew my passport before it expires? I apply to lift conditions around May 09.

Got the call it was ready on 18th Nov.

I just picked it up today.

Both times I went to the passport office I was there around 8am and I was the only person there.

No queues like back home.

Cost: $226 as I picked it up.

Advice: Check the days the office is closed. I went the day before Veteran's day and they were closed.
