Man Fires Shots at Campaign Office of Black Candidate for Sheriff in Texas

A white man drove up to the campaign headquarters of a black candidate for sheriff in Texas on Monday, shouted a racial epithet and then shot at the office, shattering a glass door, the candidate, Zena Stephens, told several news outlets.

Stephens told NBC News that she was standing outside the office in Beaumont, Texas, with four or five other people when the incident occurred. There were about 25 more people inside the building. No one was hurt.

Later on Monday, Beaumont police arrested a white male and were questioning three other men and a woman at a residence in Beaumont's West End, KBMT-TV reports. Police told KBMT they believe the same suspect might have been involved in another shooting around the same time at a MetroPCS store in town, where a window was shot out.

Police believe the weapon might have been a pellet gun, BB gun or air rifle.

"Anytime something like that happens with innocent people around, you're concerned for them," Stephens told NBC. "I don't know if it was a random act or whether it was targeted, but I just think it is, you know, ignorance."

Police told KFDM-TV that someone from Stephens's office followed the vehicle after the shooting, and that police found two weapons inside it.

Stephens is one of three Democratic candidates for Jefferson County sheriff. The primary election is being held Tuesday.

Ray Beck, the Republican running for sheriff, told KBMT: "This is a real travesty. This should not happen in modern times. I am a personal friend of Zena's, and we are all glad that she and her friends and members of her campaign were not injured."

Rod Carroll, assistant chief deputy for the Jefferson County sheriff's office, added: "Thank God that no one was hurt. I do not condone that kind of behavior or violence. We, as a community, should stand against violence."

I would have no sympathy for him if the police had shot him. This does not sound like he shot at anyone. The woman certainly was in no danger of dying. I do not expect any attempted murder charges to be filed. Maybe vandalism.
