I am currently a green card holder living in UK and have just completed my PhD. As these things go it took longer than anticipated and I have not returned to the US for approximately 20 months and I am aware now that I need to relinquish my green card and had planned to do so in the next few months. However, an opportunity has arisen to travel to the States for a week long vacation leaving this Saturday and return flights have been booked. Rather foolishly I hadn't actually given much consideration to my status and entering the country. I understand that to surrender my card I need to complete some paper work (I-407 form) and then apply for a visitor visa, through the consulate. However with such short notice I have been unable to get an appointment. Does anyone know if I can surrender my card at my port of entry into the states? Should I apply for a visitors visa in advance of my trip? Should I just plan on not travelling? :-(

I have looked everywhere online and can't seem to a definitive answer.
Hoping one of you out there knows the answer.
Thanks xx
