N-400 March 2016 Filers

My husband had his interview today in Houston. He was recommended for approval.

His appointment was at 7:15 am at the new USCIS office on Gears Road. We got there almost an hour early and waited in the parking lot. Lots of parking. We went on in about 7 am. Security was similar to airport security, although we were able to leave our shoes on, thank goodness. The waiting area is actually pretty large, with plenty of seating and monitors showing the civics test questions and the like. No phone or electronic device usage in the lobby--a couple of people were loudly reprimanded by the receptionists and security guards on this issue. I brought a huge bag containing all the stuff we had sent in since the beginning of the visa process, photo albums, etc. Mr. Vilya had a folder containing originals of everything we had sent with the citizenship application, plus the latest tax transcript and a few other updated bills and such. I figured if the officer wanted anything else, Mr. Vilya could come out to the lobby and get it from me. He was called in in about 30 or 40 minutes.

I didn't attend the interview, so I can only go on what he told me about the actual process. He saw a female officer, and he says she was nice but kept it professional and efficient. She seemed busy so really didn't chat with him, except to ask him how the US immigration process compared to the Australian one (he worked for Australian immigration before moving here). First he gave her his green card, passport and other required documents. Then it was time for the civics test, which he passed easily. I believe the questions were:

1. If both the president and the vice president can no longer serve, who becomes president?

2. What did the Declaration of Independence do?

3. We elect a senator for how many years?

4. How many supreme court justices are there?

5. Name a branch of government.

6. What does the president's cabinet do?

He didn't report on the English test questions.

She asked to see our latest tax transcript, no worries. Then she went over the yes/no questions on the application. The only supporting evidence she asked to see was the 2015 tax transcript. She did ask for a utility bill, but then realized we had sent them in with the application, and she was satisfied with that. That was pretty much it. She gave him his letter with 'recommended for approval' checked, and told him he would likely be taking the oath at the September ceremony, and to expect his oath letter in two weeks. It took about 15 minutes at most. Then it was off for a celebratory breakfast at Denny's, or as my husband said, "The most American thing you can do."

Now to wait for the oath letter. I am so glad we are almost done with this and then no more US immigration stuff to deal with! Yay!

Hi. Quick update. I've been waiting since last Monday to receive my oath letter. But we've been having some problems with getting our mail recently, so today I called USCIS and spoke with a tier 2 agent to get my oath date.

My oath ceremony is scheduled for September 15th at 8:30am. Yay!!

Just got a text that husband's case was updated. They've (Houston) scheduled his oath ceremony and mailed his notice. Hopefully we will have it soon, and I am cautiously planning for his oath to be in September. Exciting!

Interview went smooth as can be. Arrived a bit early and Ale was called in literally about two minutes later. They went over the normal questions from the application. Asked to recap some trips out of the US. Didn't ask for any paperwork. The questions, let's see if I can remember: What is freedom of religion? Name a state bordering Canada. Name the ocean on the east coast. What year was the Constitution written? How many Senators? What age do you have to register for military service? Went so quick we were out of there before the scheduled appointment time.
