Should I import my Vehicle to USA?

Hi there, so if all things go according to plan I will be marrying in the States/moving there.

My future husband (the petitioner) lives in Buffalo, NY. I live in Ontario, Canada.

About an hour away from one another...

But I am unable to wrap my head around my automobile issue.

I was wondering if anyone had dealt with this personally and if they could give me any advice in particular, that would be amazing.

My main question, really. Is it cheaper to sell my car in Canada and buy a new automobile in the states, or should I actually go through the process of importing my car?

It was not a hassle at all to import your principal vehicle to the US.

There are special provisions that make it much simpler than usual, since you are relocating. I remember just having to get a letter from the car manufacturer to say it complies with the US standards, then filling out a form and driving it across the border. I went in, they took the form and stamped it and it was done in under 30 mins. Then I licensed it in the US, got insurance and all that fun stuff and I was good to go!

CR1 / CR2 Visa:

(Day 1) 12/16/11: I-130 Application sent

(Day 283) 09/24/12: Interview at US Consulate – Approved!

(Day 287) 09/28/12: Visa Received & Immediately entered US using Visa

(Day 290) 10/01/12: Social Security Card sent automatically

Removal of Conditions CR1 / CR2
(Day 1) 07/28/14: Application sent.
(Day 135) 12/10/14: ROC Approved!
(Day 143) 12/18/14: 10 year GC received (IR1 / IR2)

Naturalization:
(Day 1) 06/30/15: Application sent.
(Day 210) 01/26/16: Interview and Oath Ceremony. DONE!

***Son and I became US Citizens 01/26/16***

(Day 1) 01/27/16: Applied for my U.S. Passport
(Day 14) 02/10/16: Passport Book & Cert of Naturalization received

(Day 23) 02/19/16: Case received at local office

(Day 88) 04/23/16: In line for oath scheduling *Called USCIS to inquire about why there is an oath required for a child under 14. They sent a service request to the field office.

(Day 95) 04/30/16: Received letter from field office to say no oath necessary and that they would mail the certificate.
(Day 106) 05/11/16: Cert of Citizenship received by registered mail (they never sent tracking. case status was never updated either)

I imported my car too and it was really easy. I had to get the letter of compliance from Toyota and they emailed it the same day then I remember I had a couple of forms that I thought I needed, but when I got to the border they didn't require them. They stamped some form that they had there for me and that was it. I used that to get my car registered at the DMV.

If you want to keep your car, I would go for it. At least ask about the letter of compliance to see if your car is good to import. If you search on here for letter of compliance and the maker of your car, you will probably get lots of info.

My vehicle is a 2008 Ford Escape. I do own it outright.

Good!! If you dont have the stickers you can get the letter from Ford Canada.

Absolutely. You technically do not own a car that has a lien on it so you can't import it. Either pay the car off or sell it before immigrating. Sometimes you are even violating your loan by trying.
