Engagement

Hi, all!

I'm new here and have scrolled through a few forums, but am confused about when we can apply. My boyfriend and I are planning marriage, he just hasn't met my dad yet and he wants to do that before he actually proposes. He's coming over in June (he lives in England) to meet my dad and will be proposing then, but is it possible to start the application process now, without proof of the ring? Or is a receipt necessary to provide in the process? We'd like to get him here and married as soon as possible (like anyone can blame us!) and this is the one thing holding us back from starting the process. Thank you so much and I'm sorry if this is a duplicate question!

Yep, as long as the two of you have met in the last two years, and you genuinely are planning to get married, you can file now.

There's no law that says you need a ring up be engaged. Many couples (us included) never have a ring. Since "engaged" is not an actual legal status, it's open to interpretation as to when one becomes engaged. My husband didn't exactly propose, we just realised over time that we wanted to get married. So I didn't know when we became engaged, if we ever did.

The rules are simply that you must be free to marry (not still married to someone else and above the required age to get married) and willing to marry within 90 days of his arrival into the country with the visa. Anything else is just personal choice. Rings, parties, proposals, etc, etc. You must get married in the USA. It's not possible to do a K-1 visa and then go to the Bahamas to get married.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

Yes, rings are not required.

Or is a receipt necessary to provide in the process?

No

It's not holding you back. File today.
