I currently have a Health insurance policy I bought when entering on K1 visa that covers me for $100,000

When I looked online at the Health.gov site without logging in, as someone married within 60 days, it was suggesting I could get a bronze policy for $58 month.

However when I enrol with all my details, like SSN it comes out at $220 a month

Any idea of the increase reason, is it because of status? and also does this sound a normal payment amount?

I'm wondering whether to just renew my initial policy that I entered on, until I work and then see if my employment comes with Health insurance?

I'm wondering whether to just renew my initial policy that I entered on, until I work and then see if my employment comes with Health insurance?

Questions: the health insurance policy was purchased through whom? Is it temporary insurance marketed toward immigrants or visitors? Or did you somehow obtain it through a private insurance company such as Blue Cross or Aetna? How does your spouse have insurance at this time?

Options for you are as follows:

Obtain health insurance if your spouse works and has insurance through their work (you can be added to their policy)

Obtain health insurance through a private insurer as mentioned above - either jointly with your husband or individually.

Obtain health insurance through the website you mentioned. The rate quoted sounds correct, lower rates are usually for those with situations that allow them to tap into the subsidy. This does not apply to everyone, and the rate quotes on the federal website are similar prices to those you'd find with plans you can purchase privately. The price sounds like something one would find for a bronze plan and is normal. My joint bronze plan with my husband purchased privately is at $400+ per month. The cost of a plan will rise depending on how many are covered and how much better the coverage is. Bronze plans typically have a lot of out of pocket costs in addition to the premium per month.

Temporary insurances, 'gap insurances', and insurances marketed to new immigrants and visitors to the US while available from websites are NOT federally compliant coverage under current federal regulation. This means a penalty may still apply, because in the government's eyes you are considered to have insurance not good enough/nonexistent.

The above methods mentioned are all acceptable means to obtain compliant insurance.

thanks for your quick answer

I didn't put the name of the provider, as I noticed on another thread someone had one removed - but yes it was bought aimed at Immigrants and mentioned K1 specifically, not bought through a private provider

My husband is still covered through his family health insurance as he is a student and also works. His job have offered him insurance too if he decides to take that.

When I looked at penalties, it seemed to be $695 penalty is this correct? Its just if i can extend my immigration insurance (they initially said it was able to be extended for 12 months) then it would be cheaper to keep the immigration insurance - hopefully get my own cover when I get a job - and then pay the penalty if i get one at the end of the year?

That is correct. How much you pay all relates to how long you go without coverage. Less time = not full penalty. While it's up to you whether or not to keep that insurance you currently have, I've seen more than a few persons state how they may have trouble using that temporary immigrant coverage should they become ill. Some people continue to go without any insurance at all, thinking the risk to them is low and to pay one lump sum penalty is cheaper than a monthly premium (and hopefully they stay healthy and accident free!).

If you plan on doing as you describe that's certainly fine if you're okay with that. I would look into seeing if the insurance offered via your husband's work place is better and would also add you as a spouse. Something to investigate later on.
