Thank you for both of your replies! I am going to wait another week before calling - but as it stands, neither my EAD or my GC have been approved yet :( I seem to be the only moron that didn't apply for a SSN because I was unaware of the time frames. I suppose my own ignorance is coming to bite me, but I really hope this does not delay the process.

Does anyone know if your SSN is given to you on the day, but the paperwork takes 2 weeks to come through? I have heard mixed reviews but now I am stuck over here with no bank account having to use my UK account, no drivers license so I'm stuck in my apartment, and unable to work :( It is so frustrating and I am certainly going crazy!

ALSO does anyone have any tips for getting a US drivers license? I do not have a UK drivers license as I have not yet learnt how to drive.

I applied for a Ssn number on a Monday and by the next week, on Wednesday, I already had the card in hand. The officer said around 10 working days, that seems to be the regular timeframe they work with.

May I ask which bank you looked into opening the bank account? In my case, I went to get an account and even though I had the Ssn number, they didn't put it on because they said I'm not a resident. (They're stupid) but I have a working account, been using a debit card, checks and can even do things through online banking.

Edit: the drivers license requirements will vary from state to state. Check your dmv for more info. Here where I am I believe it's better to wait for ead to get a longer validity. (Not sure because I was lazy to get through the whole dmv website reading. I also hate driving and I've been postponing getting to this point)

1) You don't get your SSN on the spot, but it is mailed to you afterwards. Mine took about a week.

2) I'm in the same shoes as you are about the drivers license. Here in Texas you need to complete an online course, then you can apply for a learner's/temp license, you have to drive X hours with a qualified driver in the right seat, then you need to take a test. In my case, I got to have the temp license once I was able to prove I live in Texas (letters from USCIS, SSN, marriage certificate, etc.), but it was only valid until my I-94 expired (90 days after entry). I could renew it now in theory as I received my EAD, but EAD isn't in the system due to USCIS not updating it. You can research the subject on your local DMV website, but I would imagine it to be very similar.

Hello all!

I got my EAD card in my hand on 4/27 and on 5/06 I went to change my name on my SSN . Today after 3 weeks I called the ssn office and they said that they just got the confirmation from Homeland Security , because when I went there they said that my card was too new and they could not find me in the electronic files. The lady she told me probably will take 1-2 weeks until I get my new SSN card and after that finally I can get a job :D .

I had the same problem with SS, they had to check with DHS because the card was "too new". They had told me 2-4 weeks for verification, and it's been more than 3 weeks now with no updates. I just checked with them yesterday, but I was told to wait one more week.

Since I had a SS Card on my maiden name, they said I can go ahead and accept employment with that because it will be the same number, even if the verification is pending.

The only problem with that verification pending is that the DMV won't issue me a DL...

I was able to take the written test with my EAD, which they will hold my approved results for 60 days, but they won't allow me to do the driving test until SS is cleared. :-/

I said Sept 15 from memory, but actually looking and seeing Sept 3 makes it worse. But that cannot be right anymore because they have already schedule interviews for some April filers at the Santa Ana office.

Plus when I call and listened to the info they automatically give me with our receipt number, it says our app is still in Lee Summit, MO at the NBC office, not our local office.

I didn't apply SSN when I just got here (using I-94) too, was busy with the wedding, new house, new family, etc.. I tried to apply for ssn 10 days before my I-94 expired but they denied it cuz they said the date was too close to being expired :crying: So I applied for SSN after I received my EAD card.. and today I went to SSA office again to apply for ssn for my son using green card (our GC was approved a week after I got my EAD card) But they told us to come back again later after I received my ssn....they said they still waiting on DHS verification.... :halloween:

About drivers license, I went to DMV and showed them my GC & my license (from my country) but they said they only need GC and SSN...so I'm still in the waiting game too...it's sucks being stuck at home and can't do anything, but I believe this will be over one day....!! just keep yourself busy! x

You are right, I just called and says Lee Summit, MO for mine as well - March 25th Fingerprint Fee - is that where you are too?
