Did anyone else have to translate their husband or wife's birth certificate? (I'm fluent in his first language[and he's fluent in English...exciting to have bilingual babies]) so I didn't have to pay anyone to do that, whoop!) I was a little obsessive and made sure to translate ANYTHING that had words...even the stamps. So if I get an RFE it better not be for that haha!

Hello everybody!

My husband and I got married last week and I sent my AOS file on March 02. I'll be joining you guys in this journey and I can't wait for this whole process to be over, haha. We decided to do the research ourselves and apply without an attorney, so VJ has been a huge help!! Most questions that I had while filling out the paperwork, someone else had had it before.

Good luck to all of us!

My birth certificate is from Brazil and despite being fluent in both languages, I decided to buy a translation to "make it look more official", if you would. As far as I understand, USCIS does not require to be a certified translation, and you can do it yourself. But I just preferred to be safe.

In case you decide to buy it as well, I used and recommend Rev (online-based), which returned with my translated BC in just a couple hours as well as a certification of translation accuracy. It cost me about $28. It's all online and I can print other copies if I need for other purposes.

Oh that's great! That's why I went ahead and did it myself since USCIS doesn't ask for anything official. I already sent the package in, so even if I decided to that, too late! Thanks for the tip, perhaps I can use it for future visa filings. Unless my translated one works... then I just won't bother.

Thanks again!

Hi all, we're going to be ready to send off AOS soon, I have one question though - I am changing my name to my husbands, do I have to wait for my SS card to be changed before we file?

Hello trudi,

I had the same question too. In my case, my marriage certificate shows only my maiden name, which really confused me.

From what I learned from other VJers, it seems that the Marriage Certificate alone is the proof of my name change (whether it has my maiden or married name on it) and you don't have to wait for your new SS card to be able to send your AOS. Just make sure to send copies of the marriage certificate as evidence of name change for each of the forms, including the EAD/AP, since the documents submitted still might have your maiden name on it.

In fact, depending on the situation, you might have to wait for your EAD or GC to be able to go to SS.

I hope it helps.

MASH what you included in your packet is almost identical to what we sent, except I sent the I-693 only because the DS-2035 vacc page they gave to my husband was REALLY dark and very hard to read

^_^

I had sent some initial evidence of common residence (signed apt lease agreement, proof that's he on my health and dental insurance) only because other VJ'ers said to send some in...even though the instructions don't say anything of that sort. After someone on here confirmed that sending all that isn't necessary, I threw it all in the package and sent it away!
