Hi all,

We sent our AOS and i-765 on 11th and it arrived on the 14th! Currently waiting for NOA1.

I have a question, I hope someone can help me? I was told my a lawyer that I would not be able to get SSN until I have a status (so until I receive green card or EAD whichever comes first) which was extremely depressing because I can't even get my driver's license so I'm currently stuck at home!

I see that a lot of you have applied for SSN after marriage. How do you go about doing so and are you allowed even though you technically don't have a status until your green card or EAD comes?

Thank you so much in advance!

Yes it's strange that some people can get it and others can't. We were able to get one for my husband. It says "can't work without DHS authorization". We still don't have a driver's license. According to the North Dakota DOT website he's gotta have his Greencard AND EAD card...which we obviously don't have. This doesn't bother us too much since without the GC the license expires in a year so...might as well wait to get the GC

BUT when I went in to change my DL to reflect my new married name, I asked the lady who was helping me if my husband can drive with his foreign DL. She said that he can no problem. The only thing is that with insurance, he's not covered for accidents or anything, even though I was able to add him.

Therefore when he DOES drive...he does so VERY carefully. Thank goodness North Dakota is not known for heavy traffic and crazy drivers lol

I will try to go into my nearest SS office this week to ask. In Florida you don't need a green card to get a license, your foreign passport and ssn are enough, so I really want to get insurance so that my husband can add me to his car insurance until I get my own car haha.

It is in fact weird that some people can get it and others can't, but then again, every state operates differently.

I was under the impression that you my husband could get a drivers license without his greencard as long as he had a social security number. But now that you mention it when I took my step daughter to get her Permit they made us come back with her green card. Grrrrr! I was so excited for the day when I could stop driving him everywhere!

ETA: I just checked NYS DMV and it allows you to use a EAD card in lieu of greencard with a bunch of other supporting documents.

According to the Website for North Dakota DMV it looks like he only needs his EAD and Social security card. It doesnt say you need booth. Why would someone have a green card and an EAD at the same time anyway? I would call someone and check.

Congratulations! and now I officially think there is a problem with mine, it is so weird I got nothing yet or there is no logic in the way they process packets when they receive them...This is making me so frustrated...

Ach, you should receive the paper copy of the NOA withing 10 days of USCIS receipt of your package. Granted that there may have been delays, you can call the USCIS helpline, press option 1, press option 2, press option 2 again, and option 2 again. Once you reach a representative, tell them it's been more than 10 days since you sent the package. They will then elevate the call and transfer you to a representative who can track case by name, SSN etc. Hope this helps :)

03/01/2016- FedEx'ed I-130, I-485, I-765 and 2 Checks ($1070+$420) to USCIS Chicago Lockbox
03/02/2016- Package recieved by USCIS, signed for by J. Chyba

My 6 mo car insurance premium is due today, so I called yesterday to finally updat my name and marital status. I asked about my husband bring added. Before he left Jamaica he got an international license. The insurance agent said it is less expensive to add him with a TX DL than an International one so we should wait to add him.

Driving is different when you have to change driving sides of the road. Fun, fun.....

If I may be of some help, I received the electronic NOAs on March 8 but the record numbers didn't show up as recognized in the USCIS case tracker until the following Monday mid-morning of March 14. So for that, it seems as though it's just going to be a few business days until that updates. You received your e NOAs on the 13th, I would say perhaps 7 business days? They seem slow on updating the record numbers in their system

We received our electronic NOA 1 on march 8th and the hard copy on march 12th. The strange thing is, as of today(march 16th), we can only get a case status for our I-485 and I-131 but not for our I-765 EAD card application. When we enter the MSC receipt number for the I-765 on the case status site we get this error message. We're not sure why this is happening

Validation Error(s)

You must correct the following error(s) before proceeding:

My Case Status does not recognize the receipt number entered. Please check your receipt number and try again. If you need further assistance, please call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283.

Okay, I was a bit concerned about my notices so I called them after 10 days. They asked me which date I sent it in. After I told them the date, they said that since it has been more than 10 days, they are going to elevate the phone call to an officer who had access to personal information of applications. This officer then looked up some of my information and gave me my case numbers and even confirmed the addresses the notices were being sent to. In one case, one of my receipts had gone to the wrong address and he was able to correct the address for me and re-send me one. Hope this helps :)
