Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Starting March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or transit through Canada will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid visa.


Entry requirements for other methods of travel (land, sea) have not changed.
Do not wait until the last minute – apply now for an eTA.



United States - permanent residents

Starting March 15, 2016, you need an eTA to visit or transit Canada by air. You can apply now for an eTA.
If you travel before March 15, 2016, you do not need an eTA but you can still apply for one. For now, make sure you travel with acceptable travel documents and identification, such as a valid passport.

If you travel by land or sea, you will not need an eTA when you enter Canada. However, you must travel withacceptable travel documents and identification.

Very important point also for Canadian citizens who are also citizens of another country (than the USA) and are used to travel on their "other" passport (I know I did for the longest time because a Canadian passport was not necessary and my European passport was less expensive to get, would let me skip the line in Europe and last 10 years...); they are not eligible to the eTA and will have to get a Canadian passport.
