Hi folks,

I have applied for a K-1 visa for my Brazilian fiancee. While waiting for the application to be approved, we have started looking into documentation we will need for the embassy. She's originally from Minas Gerais, currently living in Sao Paulo. We followed some links and got 2 online police certificates, one from MG and one from Federal. Considering how easily we got these, I just want to be sure we didn't miss something :)

Can someone please verify if this is the kind of certificate required by the US embassy? I'm attaching snippets of the documents we got online.

Hi mrbdpf,

yes, those are the ones. Don't forget he will also need one from the state of São Paulo (if he lives or have lived there as you mention on your message). I needed two (from Parana and Santa Catarina states), but first I had to get a state ID in Parana in order to get the certificate. If he does not have a state ID in São Paulo, he'll probably need to get one before, which can take a few weeks.

Also, although some of the certificates show a short period of validity, the US Consulate in Rio accepts them for a year from the issue date.

Thanks a lot for confirming, Joster. I will ask her to get a state ID from Sao Paulo. Initially she was going to try to get a police certificate from "poupa tempo", but if it is not difficult to get a state ID from SP, that is probably the way to go. Thanks for that tip!

my husband is from minas, and he initially got his civil police certificate from there and then the federal too.

during the wait for the green card, he has now moved to rio de janeiro. anyhow, he was able to get a civil police certificate there without getting a state id from rio. he initially called "poupa tempo" office and they indicated that he needed to go to another government office in Rio.

IIFP - Instituto de Identificação Félix Pacheco

Address: R. Frei Caneca, 505 - Centro, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 20211-020, Brazil
Phone:+55 21 2333-7537

He requested the police certificate, and they told him to come back in 1 week and it would be ready, which it was.

So he didnt have to get a state id, perhaps they have a similar office in other states?

I just googled this place in SP

Instituto de Identificação Ricardo Gumbleton Daunt
Police Department
Address: R. Cásper Líbero, 370 - Centro, São Paulo - SP, 01033-000, Brazil
Phone:+55 11 3311-3221

good luck!

Thanks for your input, 2hubbys. At this point, I'm still undecided as to whether to use poupa tempo or try to get a state ID from SP. My fiancee is in Campinas, and thankfully there is a poupa tempo location there as well.

All the best for your interview next month!
