Traveling Through the US with a K-1 but not using K-1

My fiance should have her interview for her K-1 visa coming up shortly (within the next 2 months) however, we have a trip planned to travel to Rome in June just prior to using her K-1 to immigrate. The problem we have is that we travel through the US (JFK) from Canada to get to Rome. Will there be problems with immigration if she is wanting to enter the US but not use her K-1 to travel through the United States? I hope this all makes sense and any help would be appreciated!

You should either postpone the interview until after the trip or find another route that doesn't take you through the US. If she has the K1 in her passport, they will activate it even if her purpose is only transit. Good luck :-)

It will ultimately be up to the CBP. Canadians have had luck traveling to the US (usually at land or pre-clearance Ports) and not using their K visas. However,JFK may be different. What will happen if the CPB insists you use the visa? You will not be able to leave and come back to the US using the same K visa since it is a single entry visa.

Better be safe than sorry, take another route to Italy or postpone the K1 interview.
