Hello.

I had my medical exam done in November 25. My visa is issued on February 25, after a couple of months of Administrative Processing. I haven't collected my visa and passport yet, though it is available for pickup. I am wondering how much time do I have to enter the US? Is it six months since visa issued or six months since medical exam? Or the earliest of six months since the two.

My visa is IR/CR-1.

Thanks.

Will it say on the visa or passport what the latest date is when I can enter the United States?

Thank you. I'm guessing this will be the earlier of six months since medical or 6 months since issue date.. in our case somewhere around may 20?

Typically 6 months following the day med report is signed by the physician.

Visas issued by US embassies have clearly marked expiration dates. Since it's ready for pickup, best to pick up the passport and find out.. and remove uncertainty.

To explain it with dates from our personal experience: I had my medical on December 16th and interview on December 21st. Due to a 221(g), my visa was issued on February 16th and it says it expires June 16th, which is six months from the date I had my medical.

Yes. But once you become a resident of the US you may have to pay extra taxes etc on any sale of property. It's best to talk to a UK/US tax specialist about the financial implications.

I have a similar question. I was approved for my Green Card, while my sponsor lives with me in Canada. We need to go to the US for job interviews before finalizing our move to the US. How does that work with collecting the green card from the border and going back and forth before staying permanently in the US?

Thanks!

You can go back and forth but understand that you are not eligible for any Canadian benefits including health care. You'll need to purchase health insurance and if you're currently working in Canada you should declare yourself a non-resident on your taxes and also make sure you file your US taxes.

Should I enter the US stating that I am immigrating even though I will be returning to Canada within a few days for another couple months before I am able to permanently settle in the US?

Thanks!

When they see your visa they may require you to activate the visa. You can ask if you can enter without acitivating up until the visa expiry but it's up to the individual CBP officer. If you're moving anything they likely would require you to activate the visa.

But otherwise no its not an issue to activate and then leave for a little bit to close up loose ends.
