Please I need advice on how my husband should file his tax. Before may 2015, he was taxed as married. But after may 2015, he was taxed as married but tax singly.

Now he thought we would be able to come in on time to get SSN so he could file the tax and claim us as dependents.

Now he just tried filing as married but single and he said the sample showed he may need to pay back between 4000 to $5000.

How can getting a tax identification number (TIN) help our situation

Are you, the spouse currently in the US? You can file as Married filing Jointly if you are. Even if you haven't received an SSN card yet, you can go in person to apply and get one in 10 days.

If not, he can filed as Married filing Separately. Use this link to figure out how to get an ITIN: https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/General-ITIN-Information

The April 15th filing dates is the deadline before interest starts being charged for those who will owe. If you expect to get a refund. He can just wait until you get here he can file whenever he wants and when you get SSN than he can file. There's no rush when you are expecting a refund. Just most who get refund want their money now.

ITIN would not apply to you. You will be here soon. Yes. No need. And it takes a lot of work and documents from you by then you would be there. If one knows they will soon be getting a SSN there really is no need to be requesting a ITIN. Wait till you get here and he can file Head of Household.

There's no Married but single option. If you are married you are to file as Married filing jointly or Separate or Head of Household Never single.

Please what can be his reason for filing an exemption and does requesting for tax exemption have any consequence.

Exemption is a totally different matter than a Extension.
