It just drives me nuts that Melania Trump is making immigration to the US sound as easy as filing out a few forms and bam you're welcome. Sure it's easy when you're not overly scrutinized for a green card or you have the luxury of traveling in between waiting for petitions to get approved. Americans outside the immigration process truly have no idea . . .

I assume she came here through work, H1b?, so it most likely was a simple process for her.

Several ways she could have got her GC, not seen it mentioned, does not seem to be through marriage.

What pisses me off is that she can speak 5 languages fluently.

Naming your son Barron irks me.....why not His Majesty, or Senator

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

It's true they have no clue. I heard somebody who supports Trump or Cruz on the radio complaining about illegals who come to the US and take advantage of services and "don't even want to become citizens". Oh yes they sure as H do want to become citizens.

I am vehemently opposed to illegal immigration and I do in fact believe a wall should be built (there is one--it needs to be extended, with more manpower to monitor it) to keep everybody south of the border out who are piling through illegally. However, I won't pretend becoming legal is easy or cheap. Even with a good job it is, at the very least, a massive hassle. And for many poor there is literally no way to citizenship except through marriage.

I found it odd that Melania Trump said she had to "keep going back to Slovenia every 6 months to get her passport stamped". I could be forgiven for thinking she was living in the US in 6-month installments in a B1/B2.

I am vehemently opposed to illegal immigration and I do in fact believe a wall should be built (there is one--it needs to be extended, with more manpower to monitor it) to keep everybody south of the border out who are piling through illegally. However, I won't pretend becoming legal is easy or cheap. Even with a good job it is, at the very least, a massive hassle. And for many poor there is literally no way to citizenship except through marriage.

Perhaps so. I admit I've seen a lot of threads here by people from what I consider to be garbage countries who have been here for a while, could have applied for citizenship, but just never bothered. Meanwhile, being a non-citizens, there is always the chance something bad happens and you get deported on something that is not even a huge deal for a citizen.

My wife just finished her citizenship classes, passed the interview and is waiting for her oath. This process has been an eye opener for me. In her class she met two Vietnamese ladies who had already become citizens but wanted to learn more about the U.S. Then there were the two Mexican gentleman she met who are here illegally. They were taking the class to learn about the U.S even though they acknowledged the can never apply for natualization.

I was thinking the same thing. Was she living here one a tourist visa? Did she mean she was on a temporary work visa as a model and had to go home and renew? So many people have opinions about immigration and yet know nothing about it.

Now, in fairness, Melania Trump did not arrive in the United States and in an instant become a U.S. citizen, eligible to vote. The latter is a process that takes several years and involves some mandatory waits plus processing time, a test and so on. For her, the transition from new arrival to U.S. citizen took 10 years. And, again, she is a model, married to a billionaire. She also had access to legal assistance to shepherd her application through the process and stay on top of deadlines and mandatory wait times
