Social security card inquiry

How soon after my husband arrives should we expect his social security card? He is due to arrive on Feb 27 and on his ds260 we did indicate the address to send the card.

Have they been consistent in send the cards soon after and how soon can we expect it? Would it be proactive to go to the social security office to apply for one and how soon can we go? I am actually waiting to file taxes until he has it in hand so we can file jointly but I dont want to be waiting idly. All advice and experience welcomed!

Hi !

I arrived to US on Feb 8 and still waiting for my SSN and Green Card as well.

We will go tomorrow to the nearest SS Office to see if I can get the SSN asap, I need it to apply for jobs and to start my own credit ... ?

So you both can try going to the SS Office to ask... you don't lose anything!

~~moved to SSN from IR1 progress reports~~

The SSN if it shows up, should arrive within 2 weeks. If it doesn't then go to the SSA office to get one.

Thanks for all the responses... If it wont hurt the process, I think I will plan a trip to the SS office as we would like it asap.

Before 2 weeks its unlikely they have you in the system and cant issue an SSN.

It hasn't been two weeks yet but we did try going to the ss office on last Friday only to be turned away by the rep. She claims we need to wait 21 days before coming in bc immigration should be issuing the ss #. I tried to inquire whether she would tell me the same thing if I had said I did not tick yes that I want them to send me the ss card by mail.. But all she did was talk over me and my question saying why would I do that! I decided to let it be bc I was enjoying the few days off I had to be with my husband and didn't want to waste another minute of my time at the office since it seemed it would be a battle to get them to just process his application.

SSN should not be required to be added to health insurance and as a general rule many persons have been added to insurance without disclosing or having one. It's not their business to know.

I am in same boat... As per my HR dept ssn is not needed to add but they will drop and roll to cobra if the ssn is provided by 3/31! Im just hoping it arrives as everthing is pending jobs, medical insurance, tax filing!!?
