I remember what it was like being young and thinking I could make a difference. Then I realized the reality of it all and became a grumpy old man.

if complete indifference to zero personal control of one's own destiny is the endgame of adulthood in america, essentially there's no point in voting at all. no point in adulting at all. i'll take it. i give up. (F)

until i hear what marvin and Janelle thinks about sanders versus hillary, i'm not buying the claim about black intellectuals like bernie.

Thank you and fixed for you (F)

Black folks got behind Clinton because of her husband. Before Obama, Bill Clinton was what we considered the first and only black president we were going to get since no one dreamed a black man could run and actually win. Bernie fought for civil rights and has talked about racism openly on more than one occasion(my only issue with him is the reparation argument). This earns him my respect.

You and Ta-Nehisi Coates. You should read what Obama thinks of reparations. It's one thing to believe in and endorse the idea and another to be realistic in the chances of its success in the current political climate.

Bernie Sanders' record on the fight for Civil Rights is unparalleled in this current (or any) crop of non-minority politicians. Many black people are beginning to learn about him but it's a shame many more still don't know. Even worse, some black people would vote for Hillary Clinton because she shows up at a black church on Sunday with Bill Clinton and they talk jive. That's after he oversaw the largest incarceration of African Americans of any administration. I can't say I ever understood this "first black president" thing. Bill Clinton never veered too far from his redneck Arkansas roots.

I'm black and I'm voting for the old Jewish guy.

Oh I'm fully aware that it will never happen in this country. We've paid dividends and attempted to made amends with every group of people we've every done wrong with the notable exception of black people. You'd have a better chance of trying to walk to the sun.

You know how it is for our people. Outside of Kennedy, when it comes to black people and presidents, we don't exist since our voting block is so small. The smallest thing means so much in terms of racism, we were happy to have a President that acted like he was "down". And he milked it for all it's worth. I met him back in 2000 in DC, and I remember thinking how I didn't want to meet any other president but Clinton back then. Blind I was.

Brought this up in another thread. Black loyalty is a powerful thing, but we always put it in the wrong place(except President Obama, he's where he belongs).

Human/tribal loyalty, rather. We're on the same page. Obama is certainly one of the greatest presidents of this country. Perhaps in the top 5. And I still think he's not good enough!

None of this is simple or as it seems. None of these people running for office are idiots or evil. America is so complex and with such a torrid past, it's difficult to figure it completely. But some things remain true throughout its history and that of the world. There's a constant struggle for finite resources.

Read the other day about white, middle aged, men with only high school diplomas (and they're in the many millions) are dying prematurely at a faster rate than any other race. Shocking this was to the scientists as they expected it to remain black (or some other shade of brown) men dying off before they collect social security in full.

It's an EPIDEMIC, some screamed. The reasons? So many to count. They're drinking too much. They can't compete in this global economy. The jobs they were entitled to (:)) have been outsourced, shipped offshore, sent to Mexico/China/Vietnam. There's a negro in the White House and he's destroying the country with the Affordable Care Act. And on and on...

Black and brown men aren't dying at the same rate because they're not entitled to anything. They don't care who's in office because their lives are so difficult they've acquired immunity to hardship. And when it's too much, they take it out on each other, a la the south side of Chicago.

Not too different from the middle aged men dying prematurely is the Heroin "epidemic" going through white suburbia like wildfire. Just last night I watched on Frontline the misery this drug is wreaking on normal families just like mine. Except, they're not quite like mine. Upwards of 90% of those young people dying are white. And now every law enforcement agency (local, state and federal) is screaming this is a national health crisis. Yeah? These young people need medical help, yeah? Locking them up and throwing away the key (a la Reagan, Bush and Bill Clinton) will not solve the problem, yeah? Let's spend billions on rehabilitation and finding a cure, yeah?

It's too easy for a black man to scream KARMA IS A &$^#) but that would be inhuman. I just wish the same humanity is extended to brown and black in America.

Still the greatest country in the world though. Bar none.

Hmmmm, I think you're confused. The majority of black people don't elect someone thinking the President of the U.....S......A.....will personally help them. However, we do expect the president not to legislate policy which will affect our community and minorities only. Like, the war on drugs........ like the war on drugs........like the war on drugs. ......

But hey, now that selling weed is legal in Colorado we have well off individuals getting rich while thousands of minorities have been locked up for taking and selling weed. Leaving homes fatherless and motherless. ..........

None the less, it's OK. Someone's pockets are getting fat, yes? Will these people now be let out of jail? Of course not.

However, isn't Obama doing something to help non-violent offenders reduce jail sentences and be set free?

Perhaps through increased access to health care through the ACA and increased employment by the 14 million jobs created during his administration. Though many of those jobs were not high paying or even permanent.

On balance, the country as a whole benefited from his presidency as he is clearly not a president for black people only.

Those who benefited the most financially and disproportionately so, are, of course, the 1%. As they always do with any administration.
