In the 80's and early 90's there was a HUGE outcry against metal that went all through the court systems - people tried to get it banned. It was a REALLY big deal and a huge turning point in the history of American music. Those "explicit content" labels? A result of the metal controversy...

People were blaming metal for suicides, murders, robberies, muggings, etc., just like they do with rap. Nevermind that maybe it's not the music that's making people do it... it's just the music is following the current social trends *cringe*.

Even still people refer to metal as "devil music." Marilyn Manson got blamed for EVERYTHING bad that happened with the youth of America from 1997-2001.

The reason you hear more negative press about rap is simply because it's more popular.

But heavy metal never defines whiteness!!

dissociation much!?

Nice move. Allow me to dissect and dismantle your response.

I was around during that time when metal was on the scene. Being a DnD geek, I found myself in circles where this was the music of choice. Metallica was the more popular choice(had an older cousin who did a tour in Okinawa and brought it back for us to listen to) as well as Ozzy Osbourne. Same thing with DnD, folks said it was devil worship and such(big fan of the cartoon show, wish it came back). But here's the difference that no one wants to talk about.

The reason heavy/death metal doesn't define whiteness is two fold. One, white people are never defined by any negative trait. Such are treated as outliers(the beauty of being white, never being held responsible for others who look like you). That's why every single white person who goes on a killing spree is called mentally ill and removed from the white community by default. But if a black/Muslim/Hispanic person does the same thing, you'll hear serious discussions about interment camps, mass deportations, or a final solution. Second, only a select few white people actually listen to it.Only way you'd associate someone with it is if they talk about it or are wearing something that points to them being a fan.

Now take a good look at metal and frame it against rap. Metal is loud music that has people singing/screaming about something. Maybe death or pain and some sorrow. That's it. Now look at rap. Men and women going into great detail about drug dealing, killing each other, degrading black women, misogyny, statutory rape, date rape, breaking the law, leaving multiple kids with women and not being around to raise them, philandering, etc. And this has been pumped into the black community non stop for the last 25 years. Videos, rappers living the life that most poor black kids dream of, of course life imitates art. That's the beauty of it. Black people are getting rich by literally destroying their own neighborhoods in song. Glorifying every single negative aspect of life to the point that these kids grow up wanting to be gangsters and drug dealers.

Every black person is assumed to listen to rap because that's how white America sees us. Can't tell you how surprised some people were when I get into their car and they try to find the rap/r&b station and I'm like it's okay if we listen to Hall and Oats, the Police, Men at Work, ACDC, Level 42.

I stopped listening to rap when I started LISTENING to rap lyrics.

As for your last comment, if any of what I said isn't true, feel free to make your move.

it wasn't just metal. specifically 2 live crew were a big part of gore's witch hunt.

but what does this have to do with the op?

i'm trying to figure out where there's even a point to argue. there are black men that refuse to date black women. i think we're just pointing out that shallow people generally don't treat others well. any person who picks a potential date based on race first and foremost, is an idiot. anyone who makes decisions in life based on racial stereotypes, is an idiot.

Val, let him talk! I've been itching to come back to the sandbox and play. Don't scare him off :ranting:

I agree with on this post but it's funny how you agree about white culture of avoiding responsibilities and yet...

I think people who date outside of their race simply because of race need a bit of introspection ...

I am shocked to learn that Black Women thinks that the Black Men are freeloaders. I am interested to hear what Black Men got to say about this too.

Any Black Man want to chime in on this to keep it out of Racism?

There are good and bad in every race. But black men in general are dealing with more issues(like black women) that aren't existing within other races. Being black, I tend to get pigeonholed as a thug, criminal, or a player before I've even opened my mouth. It comes standard since there's always an overreaction to my skin color.

Because we're always in the spotlight one way or another, our issues tend to get more exposure. Men of other races freeload, cheat, and even abuse women, but with us it's amplified to a degree that anyone else doesn't matter, but us.

My move.

Never said we're not responsible for what happening now. I am fully aware that some of our ills are self inflicted. Claiming the N-word? Dumbest. Idea. Ever. Letting rap evolve from rhyming and being witty to what it is today? A tragedy. Killing someone over some shoes? Disgusting. Supporting black folks who make millions but don't support us? Not too bright. Actually letting the stereotypes of being lazy and ignorant define us as a people? Kill yourself. You think this is bad? Try as a black person, having this same conversation about rap with other black folks who are defending this foolery. My wife and I have shut down more than a few pages when we go in on rap and the other negative things that get uplifted in our community and then we complain about the white man when we won't snitch on the drug dealers in our own backyard, or the guy who kills another brother and we don't see it even though it happens right before our eyes. We tell our women to be with horrible men, and then sit there and wonder why good black men can't get a decent sister.

Until we wake up and understand that while racism and discrimination is still the order of the day, there are some things we can control and not take part in. But I know we're talking about years of physical and mental slavery, which is worse in my book since we've now become the oppressors to our own people. Because if you really think about it, rap wouldn't flourish if it didn't sell so well. It's the most dominate musical art in the world. It's in every culture on earth. But only in America can black people demean each other. You couldn't make a derogatory song about any other race here and get radio play. But if you're black, you can sing about killing your own people and abusing black women all day and get paid for it. Think black people own radio stations and record labels? Nope. Trust and believe, we're not the ones in charge. Just like folks who say the NBA and NFL are black saturated. Black players? Yep, Black owners? Can't think of one. And who puts black people on the teams?

Just some food for thought...

but but..that's what i do.

No buts young lady. Go enlighten another member, this one is mine! :goofy:

I'm just grossed out by the fallacy that the worth of a woman -- whatever her race or ethnicity -- is based in her appearance. It's BS. If a person is a garbage person, they are a horrible human being irrespective of their appearance.

I am a mostly white woman who has benefitted from being fairly conventionally attractive. I'm not hot -- never have been -- and I'm now an Old, but I guess I'm still cute because randos remark on it. What I look like says pretty much nothing about who I am as a person, except for the fact that I'm short, and being short has probably influenced the way I look at the world, literally and figuratively. My worth is in my character, and I try to live a moral life, or at least the kind of life that I don't feel embarrassed about. I'm almost unfailingly kind to people. I have a great relationship with my parents. I love and respect my boyfriend, and do whatever I can to be a supportive partner. I'm always there for my friends. I'm even friends with several of my exes where there was a friendship to salvage. But I'm also comfortable in my skin now and I'm able to push back when I feel people are trying to take advantage of me, because now that I'm an old IDGAF. :) I think all of this says more about me than how I look.

Now who wants a sandwich? :D

Good post and it is amazing now that we are aging we just don't give a Florida. You will have to admit that looks is usually the first attraction, but I have known some wimmens I thought were not cute and after I got to know them I found them very attractive and the opposite has happened. I have also been attracted to women, that others thought were not cute, and dated some women I did not think were hot but others did. Attraction is a strange animal, but to dare suggest that being attracted to others outside your race makes you a hater of your own race is ludicrous . Example I have always been oddly attracted to Queen Latifah and Condi Rice. Not exactly your standard of hotness for older white hicks, but still !

I hope that is not you in your avatar picture cause that women is ugly to the bone

and on edit I think Power and Money make many men desirable, albeit for the wrong reasons, but I am not sure the opposite is true.

I am not sure. Heck I am not even sure if I was serious .

But yes you mostly recognized so many of the ills facing, black people in America today are self inflicted. Yes 100's of years of segregation and oppression fueled the problem, but the massive over correction has added to the problem.

Example. A girl I dated had a bestie that lived in the Apt next to her. She was a card carrying leftist psycho. (yes there are card carrying right psychos also)

anyway as in most apts, people moved in and out. One day she came gushing over wanting to get a committee together to go welcome the new tenant. A goodies bag and other such non sense. Well come to find out, he was a black man. So I asked her, why didn't you do all this when the last 4 or 5 people moved in. She spewed forth with some kind of inclusive garbage that was sickening. I mean does it not tick you off as a black person, when someone publicly kisses your behind, to ease their white guilt. To me that is just as bad as the other direction.

It's kind of like all of Hillary's black lives matter, overcoming years of oppression hoarse feathers, when you know she could care less .

Tell me this does not insult you

Sigh, hope you don't sell cars this way.

What she is saying is, those men who hate black women hate women of all races to a certain degree. Nothing wrong with dating outside of your race IF you're genuinely in love with the person themselves, not the color of their skin or their ethnicity or their culture.

Nothing wrong with it if you're just curious either. What's "love" and "dating" have to do with each other?

I'm not so sure if I find this offensive. Hell, when Tom Hanks did the eulogy for MCD, he did the same thing when he was telling a story about him when he was a kid. Clearly he was trying to impersonate his speech pattern and meant it as a joke to pay homage to someone he called a friend. But you think this is offensive? Try having to talk in a completely different manner when dealing with white people. I as well as Janelle have to do this on a daily basis. She does it better than me, to the point that it's like hearing two completely different people. Because white people are put off by anything that sounds remotely different, this is something we have to do to survive.

Nothing wrong with it if you're just curious either. What's "love" and "dating" have to do with each other?

Yeah, because I want a woman from a different race to tell me she's curious about dating a black man. It's flat out saying there's something different about you, when there isn't. Last time I checked we all belong to the human race, which makes us all equal and the same species.
