You'd have to renounce first and then apply for OCI card.

https://www.in.ckgs.us/resources/pdf/oci/new-oci-card-us-adult.pdf

If you look at Item 11, proof of renunciation is part of the document checklist.

Self-attested means the copies need to have your signature on them.

Just write a statement "This is a true copy of the original." and then sign the copy.

Yes, you may apply for both together. This is from the CKGS website FAQ "Yes, you may. After completing your OCI application go to the renunciation link mentioned below. Answer the questions displayed on the widget which will give you the full requirements for Renunciation including Checklist, Documents and/or letters, fees and penalty charges (if applicable), processing time, jurisdiction. For details, please visit: https://www.in.ckgs.us/oci/index.shtml

https://www.in.ckgs.us/renunciation/ "

It's a long process and OCI usually takes 2-3 months. Read up on everything and follow exact directions given. CKGS is even more picky than USCIS.

rock4, others,

slightly different question (been looking for an existing thread but have not found one yet).

I have PIO.

I know transition to OCI was extended to June 30 2016

Is it recommended to get OCI or can we keep PIO?

Reason for asking is that I PIO is a separate document (that does expire after 20y) but there's no 'action' needed to take on it.

OCI used to be a sticker/stamp on your US passport which was a hassle everytime you renew your US passport and then there was some age thing if you hit 60 that you had to renew at least one time etc etc

I thought at one point they had said your PIO is considered permanent (like OCI) so though it has an expiry date on it, it can be used anytime (but that sounds risky as we're at the mercy of the immigration office upon arrival in India).

Thought's recommendations?

Not too sure about that but reading this, http://www.in.ckgs.us/resources/pdf/mha.pdf ,makes it seem like it's okay as long as you have a valid passport and a card. But seeing as though it's only a $20 fee to transition to OCI, I would do it. The site also states " All PIO card holders are strongly encouraged to apply for OCI in Lieu of PIO card". http://www.in.ckgs.us/pio/index.shtml
