Hello!

I POEed on Feb 13th 2016

I got married on Feb 19th 2016

I got the certificated marriage certificate yesterday with my name change on it.

I didn't have time go get an SSN before getting married in my maiden name so I want to go to the SSN office today and get a SSN card with married name on it... is this going to be a problem?!

It seems you need a SSN card to do ANYTHING here... I'm so extremely frustrated!

Thank you!

If you go to the Social Security office today you may not show up in their system yet having done your POE just a few days ago.

This is kind of going to depend on the office you go to and how well trained their officers are. Some will even refuse to issue a SS# once you marry, saying your I-94 expired when you got married. Which it does not. Some will say they have to issue in your maiden name, because that's is the only name they have in the database. On a positive note, my wife had no issue getting her SS# after marriage and in her married name. But I think part of what helped is well trained staff here, and the marriage certificates in this state list the name before and after marriage.

Bring your i94, passport, marriage cert. You should have no issues, legally. Whether the ss office knows what they're doing is a different story

it's almost impossible to get the first ssn card issued in married name, being a K-1 visa holder.

I suggest this:

1. go in today, apply in VISA name, asking for SAVE database lookup on A# and Visa Name.

2. go in tomorrow, get the SSN number or learn of new problems.

3. wait one week.

4. go back and try for the name change. if it doesn't work before day 74 past POE,

__a. try it again after you have the EAD card or

__b. try it again after you have the green card.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

This is incorrect. Since switching to the SAVE database, your name will be in the database immediately after your POE--no need to wait!

Hello!

Thanks for the responses. I went to the SSN office yesterday and the person who helped me seemed to know exactly what he was doing. I gave him my marriage certificate, and my passport that had my K-1 in it.

He gave me my SSN in my married name which was great. Then, he showed me the piece of paper with all my information on it.. but I had noticed he put "Alien allowed to work" when I questioned on this since I haven't sent in my AOS he said that it was fine, I would be able to work on the K-1. I assume that he was just saving me a trip to the SSN to get my card changed over from "Alien not allowed to work" vs "Alien allowed to work" once my work authorization...?

He gave me a letter confirming my application and stamped it. It should be here in 1-2 weeks.

Even with EAD, until you get green card it should say you need authorization. Other than that congrats on getting someone who knows their job. We were lucky to have the same experience, thanks for following up.

Hmm.. weird. I'm not going to work until I get my EAD anyway... But once I get the card in the mail do you think I should go back in and change it? I don't want to have any issues later on!

Honestly couldn't tell you if it matters. I know it won't once you have the green card obviously.
