He may actually have trouble getting into Canada. I have heard of people being turned away at the border if they have DUI on their record.

Yep, they don't mess around and it's kind of harsh, but I applaud them for it, really. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/402/~/entering-the-u.s.-and-canada-with-dui-offenses This wasn't a DUI, though, and Canada can't prohibit a citizen from entering.

Agree with comments above: Find an immigration lawyer as well. I know for sure I've read here (?) about somebody who followed a criminal attorney's advice--which was sound--but it ended up messing his immigration up more than it should have because the criminal attorney isn't interested in the immigration ramifications.

Many of us have weird drinking stories. Very few end up in arrests. I hope your son can take it seriously and never drink again. Many of us became teetotalers over far less.

Good luck!

Very few of us try to break and enter.

Story of somebody doing that on New Years Eve locally, they got a .45 for their trouble.

I do agree that the US is odd, when I came over seemed people were either alcoholics or teetotallers and not a lot in between. OK an exaggeration.

The interesting i found is the reason why Canada doesnt allow in DUIs is because the USA told Canada to tighten its borders and therefore, they said 'we wont let in anyone with a felony' and in canada a DUI is considered a felony:/

Honesty, we all make mistakes.. he was smart enough to drive. i dont htink he should never drink again.. he wasnt violent and didnt get in a fight:/ maybe just cool it for a bit or stick to wine/beer:) No tequila!!! haha good luck!!!

There will not be an impact on him until he gets convicted so he can travel.

Make sure he absolutely checks with an immigration attorney before signing a plea. There are things in the immigration law that are quirky - for example probation counts as time in jail so >1 year probation can make you excludable. Harris County DA had a rule that all DUI's go through a 18 month treatment program in exchange for a plea - anyone with a greencard was forced to fight the case and do the minimum 30 days in jail if found guilty...but at least they kept their GC.

My son is currently heading to a "pre-trial" I don't know what goes on there and I offered to go, but he said that he and his lawyer basically sit for about 30 seconds as the charges are read and then they proceed however they proceed and it may take months. I will know more later today after this meeting is over.

He is a good kid, works 2 jobs, goes to school..just did a very stupid thing by drinking so much with his buddies. Unfortunately it was an Uber driver who dropped him off at the wrong place, he thought he was at his apartment that was the same number as his just a different unit...thought someone was in his place, kicked the door in.big mistake...yes he could have been shot. My heart breaks for him right now...you can't imagine.

Hardly blame an Uber driver if he who lived there did not recognise it.
