My wife just got here on a K3 and we have the I-485 and supporting docs ready to go. We've already got an EAD in progress because there's no telling how long AOS will take. Can we just send in the I-485 or do we have to wait for receiving something from the NVC? I've been reading posts about a "barcode", but nothing I'd consider consistent info. I sent the NVC an email, but so far no response.

Maybe I am reading your post wrong but what I think you are asking is if you have to wait for some confirmation from your EAD application before you file for AOS. If that is the inquiry, I think you can go ahead and apply for AOS because AOS and EAD can be filed together or separate.

You can send it whenever you want to, but it's generally not the best of ideas to wait until the allowed period of entry is coming to an end.

Sending off the AOS sooner is a good idea, especially if you're waiting on the AP.

You need nothing from the NVC. If you have the I-130 approval notice and all the rest of the I-485 stuff, get it out.

Then wait.

OK, it goes out Monday. FWIW, here's what I got back from the NVC:

The National Visa Center has received your inquiry regarding Receipt Number {blah blah blah}. After searching our records, no information was found regarding this case. Please contact U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS- formerly known as INS) to verify the status of this petition.

To apply for adjustment of status in the US the beneficiary must contact the nearest CIS office and submit a copy of the approval notice (Notification of Immigrant Visa Approval) sent to the petitioner by CIS. Please note that there are certain eligibility requirements for using Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status). Forms are available by calling 1 (800) 870-3676, or by submitting a request through the CIS website, http://www.USCIS.gov.

All future inquiries regarding adjustment of status should be directed to the CIS either through the website address listed above or by calling the USCIS National Customer Service Center. The USCIS National Customer Service number is: 1 (800) 375-5283. The TTY number is: 1 (800) 767-1833.

So I suppose the USCIS is sitting on it, knowing she's here, and waiting for us to send in the I-485. Very well.
