SSN Name Change

Hello VJ

About five days after POEing I went to the social office and got my SSN with my unmarried name! I received the card in about 2 weeks. After me and my husband got married I got my marriage certificate and went back to the social office to get my name changed. The man told me that during immigration they entered my first name and middle names in the same field so it doesn't corresponds properly with my actual name. So he had to photocopy my visa and passport to send to immigration so they could correct my name and change my last name two weeks later it's still pending...

Has anyone gone through this experience is it okay I sent my AOS away with this social number on it but my name still hasn't changed.

Hold onto your hat its going to be a bumpy ride!!

but don't worry you'll get through it :luv:

well, did you show any marriage cert with the new name ?

usually, before you have any federal ID showing the new name,

SSA sends out the file to DHS for DHS verification.

It's gonna be weird, as DHS has no federal record of any name change,

but

maybe you'll be OK, if the file comes back from DHS prior to day 74 of POE. After? They won't do anything unless and until you show up with a federal ID (EAD or Greencard) that has the new name.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

The combined first and middle name thing for the SSN is exceedingly common. The software from the CBP doesn't jive well with the SSA software.

I received Social Security Number in my maiden name before marriage. After marriage, we went back to SS office to change my last name and they couldn't, to my surprise.

We presented all the docs such as official copy of marriage certificate and I-94, and they couldn't !! What???

They took all the copies and sent them physically to DHS for confirmation just like Darnell says.

It took about one month to receive a second card.

Better make sure to revisit the office and ask for the time frame.

Apparently in my case the first officer forgot to send the copies to DHS and the second one took all the copies again.

SS offices will tell you to allow them 30 days to process.

Hope you'll receive yours soon!
