Financial Aid..

Alright, so I'm a student at the moment. I get financial aid grants and loans. My fiance and I have been talking about him going to school as well when he arrives or shortly after. I'm assuming since I had to fill out the affidavit of support so he wouldn't be on any public type of assistance, does this include financial aid as well? What about once he gets a green card?

You might want to check out residency requirements for your state. Sometimes you need to be resident for a year before you qualify.

You need a green card first in order to get finacial aid - but once you have that your good to go.

I was reading other posts in different areas and found a link to a USCIS website listing all the public help and whats not considered public help. I was amazed at what is actually allowed.

I would have posted the link if I new it with my post! But, I just spent the last 15-20 minutes looking on here at what forums I may have been in trying to find it. I also looked at the uscis but my search just turned up things in chinese. Not sure why.

Benefits Not Subject to Public Charge Consideration

Non-cash benefits and special-purpose cash benefits that are not intended for income maintenance are not subject to public charge consideration. Such benefits include:

• Medicaid,

• Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP),

• Food Stamps,

• the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC),

• immunizations,

• prenatal care,

• testing and treatment of communicable diseases,

• emergency medical assistance,

• emergency disaster relief,

• nutrition programs,

• housing assistance,

• energy assistance,

• child care services,

• foster care and adoption assistance,

• transportation vouchers,

• educational assistance,

• job training programs,

• and non-cash benefits funded under the TANF program.

Is that new stuff 'cus before I thought I couldn't even get medicaid.

So, afterall, what will or won't be allowed to a PR. And by that I don't mean becomign a public charge, but being later charged to my husband 'cus he signed the affidavit of support.

Well, then what is a public charge? I thought surely some of those mentioned above would be included in the definition.

I think they mean you won't get deported for getting those, but the USC can be charged for those bills, since they signed an affidavit of support. What I am trying to figure out, is what exactly are we eligible for that won't be then charged to my husband.

When one of my students went to her GC interview (as spouse of a permanent resident) the first thing she was asked was whether she had received any government aid in the form of welfare, food stamps, or subsidized health care.

So it surprised me to see food stamps included in that.
