Hi guys,

I'm confused for how they base if we meet 125% of poverty guideline? So.....if I'm filing for my spouse and I have no other dependents that I claim on my taxes..., how much exactly of income do I need to show, to meet requirement?

I looked it up and its showing for a household of 2 (me and my husband,) is $16020......if i do that by 125% it'll equal out to $20,025...correct?

Do I need to just show that $20,025....or do i multiply that by 3 years?

I dont get it. If anyone can clarify, i'd appreciate it.

Just trying to understand so I can see if I would need a joint sponsor or not (by using my own assets (savings))

Just bit of background info....I'm unemployed and have been for almost 2 years. But I did work before unemployment. I have savings and to my understanding, they can use that to substitute for income.

Do correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks :)

The right column has the 125%. Likely it will go up for 2016 but until they release a new one, it's the $19,912 for two people.

ASSETS are a different story and you need 3x the assets, so about $60k if you are not working. You can use assets to make the difference between the income and poverty guidelines as well.

I highly suggest you either become employed or have a qualified joint sponsor unless you have $60k sitting in the bank.

Thanks for such a prompt reply :)

Ok, lets say hypothetically, that I do have assets 3x the 125% which amounts to around 60k.

Would that be a guarantee that I wouldn't need a joint sponsor? and can just do an i864 myself?

I cannot guarantee you anything. You need at least that to even think about not having a joint sponsor

Or get a job making 9.75/hr

Got you. Thanks again.

I have my bro that can be a joint sponsor; wanted to see if i can sponsor on my own. But he would be a joint sponsor, if I ask. Now, i live in his house. Would it be his choice whether to file an i864 or i864a or would he automatically HAVE to file the i864a since we live in the same address? Would you

No he would use the I-864 unless he maybe claims you on his taxes.

How are you going to provide a life for a wife if you dont work?

My husband and I used assets for the i-864, as my husband (the USC) don't have an income. For a household of two, the bare minimum in assets is $60,000, but they want you to be a bit over that. You can use both yours and your foreign spouse's assets.

You need a letter from your bank stating how much assets you have and in what form, e.g. bank account, stock portfolio, property etc. The letter also needs to state if you have any loans, because they want net assets. If you're using property, you also need to include an appraisal of the property along with proof of ownership. We also had to do an excel spreadsheet basically showing the embassy where our assets came from and how we got to the totals on the i-864.

Bare in mind that you may use assets but it is up to the CO at the interview whether or not they'll accept them, so it's always a good idea to have a joint sponsor lined up.
