Are you allowed to get a regular job on a B1/B2, probably not much higher than minimum wage (like a waiter or bartender...) to be able to pay for rent and other expensens? (while having access to the savings in case of emergency). Or is there another visa more suitable?

No. if you work, you are working illegally. Working illegally is grounds for deportation.

There is no legal basis for a B1/B2 visa holder to work for wages. None.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

A B1/B2 visa holder can not work period. It doesn't matter if there are wages or not. Unpaid work is not permitted either.

If you are at all interested in looking after children, you could sign up to be an au pair. There are lots of reputable agencies you can go through. Simple google search can help you get started with your research.

There is work and travel program essentially for any country. http://j1visa.state.gov/programs/summer-work-travel

This is the program that given your experience I would look into.

a B2 holder cannot perform labor in the US, whether for money or room and board, or whether said work is on behalf of a relative.....period.

There are summer work and travel visas available through that program...(J1)....you would have to explore that option on your own.

Even volunteering (a euphemism for being paid under the table!) is not allowed by a B2 visa holder in B2 status...period. No exception. None. Zero.

Now, if the OP doubts this, merely tell the CO during your interview of your true intentions...to 'make a little money on the side' while visiting....let us know what the outcome of your interview is.

Hey, I just researched the J1 summer work visa and it seems to be a possibility. But I have some questions (I know I should post this in the other thread but maybe you know the answers).

In the official requirements it states that you have to be currently enrolled in some kind of higher education institution. But I've also seen people talk about being recently enrolled. So is it possible to do right after graduation? At the time of applying I would still be enrolled, but when leaving for the US I would be graduated. Or does that make them think I wouldn't want to return to my home country?

Also, is it a fixed period? Like from may to august or something like that, or can I choose the 4-month period mysel

It means exactly what it says -- your have to be currently enrolled and plan on returning to school. Once graduated, you do not qualify.
