Good morning VJ. I'm a 22 year old college student who recently made an application for a B2 visa. My interview is just 11 days away (March 3rd to be exact) at the US Embassy Kingston. I've been scared and nervous ever since I got the interview date. I've been to various websites and Facebook pages to read reviews and comments to try and prepare as best as possible,I've also talked to people who have been there before. The most common thing I've read is that I need to have enough ties to my country. The thing is,I only live with my mom at the moment (Dad passed away 4 years ago) and I attend school, I fear that this is not enough to convince them that I'll return to Jamaica. My question is,what is the atmosphere like inside there and what are some of the possible questions I should expect them to ask?

P.S What are the odds of me getting approved, are they in my favor? (Hunger Games reference lol)

Thank You!!!

What factors do you have in your favour?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Hi, Which school do you attend? Did you get a status letter saying you are a student? If your mother supports you then that is another tie. At this stage in life they don't expect you to have much else, like owning a home etc. Being a student actually gives you good odds. Just make sure during your interview you make it clear that you have to come back to school. Do not tell them you are scheduling a trip during a time you are expected to be in school or for a long time that would require you to be out of school for a long time. You should be fine. Try not to be too nervous when you are there and tell them the truth and you should be fine.

Good to have as a student, even though most likely 85% chance the Consular Officer wont ask for them.

1. Status Letter ('hopefully' you are not in your final year because that loosens your educational ties a bit; but if you are, nothing to worry too much over)

2. Official Academic Transcript

3. School ID

Typical questions for a student?

1. What school do you attend?

2. What are you studying?

3. Do you like what you are studying?

4. What is your current GPA? (...just maybe)

5. What year student are you (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th)?

6. When do you graduate?

7. Where do you want/hope to work when you graduate?

8. Who pays your tuition?

Other general questions:

1. Have you ever traveled to the US or any other country before?

2. Why do you want to travel?

3. Do you have family in the US? If yes, where do they live?

4. How long do you intend to stay?

5. Who do you intend to stay with?

6. Will you be travelling alone?

Try to keep your nerve and not get too shaken by the tight security environment. In all reality you probably wont be in front of the consular officer long enough for he/she to ask you this many questions.

Don't over do the formal dressing, really not necessary to look all uptight. Besides all the formality makes you feel that much more uncomfortable, right? Moderately dressed is fine, no matter if male/female: cover your toes, cover your knees, cover your chest and upper arms.

Last but not least, say a prayer before and after, no matter the results.

All the best!

A quick trip to your local International Airport will see arrivals from most countries and most age groups.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
