aye - ok

lovely

can't be bothered

that's well nice

aye nae bother (sounds like alright neighbor when he's talking to his family)

One day we were driving around, and he said curb.. but I swear it sounded like kerub or something, took me a minute to figure out what the hell he was talking about. lol I love his accent, but its weird because even hearing his family, it doesn't appeal to me as much as his does.. must be the loving him part lol

he hee!

I can nearly always understand Chris...but when I am talking to his family...sometimes I only put sentences togethers like 20 seconds later.

They have thick Yorkshire accents!

I've never actually met any of his family, but have spoken to them a time or two or hear them in the background. I do dread speaking to them, because they laugh at my accent! (oklahoma) And I wouldn't be able to understand them, as they speak pretty fast. I have noticed that Dave slows down when he's speaking to me, and slows down even more when speaking to my family. I can only imagine how retarded his extended family and friends are going to think I am when I just looked puzzled as they speak to me.. lol

I promise you it will be fine. The more and more you are around them the easier it is to understand...and you pick up on the slang.

I've been going back and forth for 3 years now....about every 3-4 months and I've gotten pretty good at deciphering. Chris has one friend that talks sooo fast but even his family has hard time understanding him.

It is always a nerve wracking experience meeting your future in-laws. Mine are fantastic, hope yours are as well!

Has anyone mentioned flamin' Nora?

When I think about it, I realise how strange it is...

Chris says bloody nora a lot...but never heard him say flaming nora...I think.

Where did it come from is what I want to know?

Where in Glasgow are ya from?

My hubby and sons are products of Paisely and we lived in this terrible, little place called Ferguslie Park :P I'm personally a Central Pennsylvania girl.

Ah, I have friends from Paisley. Never been myself. My wife grew up in Garlochhead.

What jolly good fun this is... (lol)

I had such a laugh reading the comments and realizing that, yes, I do actually use quite a lot of phrases that get me many a funny look here in the good ol' US of A. As I was reading through the comments, I started noting down some of my favorites, and then the ones I use a lot that haven't been mentioned yet. It's quite a list, but I figure you'll get a giggle from it.

Ones I use:

for crying out loud

went pear shaped

like chalk and cheese

ya wee sausage

ya spoon/being a total spoon

cheeky monkey

fortnight

ya minger

mankit

bloody hell

#######

takin' the p*ss

for #### sake

can't be ar*ed

give over

juice (for anything from coke and pepsi to OJ itself)

done and dusted

Ones I used in the UK:

don't get your knickers in a twist

thick as 2 short planks

thick as mince

as clear as mud on a dark night

ta

shoogle (shake)

tube (pronounced "choob")

muppet

plank it (sit down - my mum uses that a lot, lol)

right little madam

sorted

sarnie

cheeky chappie

#######

Ones that translate different over here:

lorry (they call it a "Semi")

running around like headless chickens (or "running around like chickens with their heads cut off")

de ja vu (or "it's like 'de ja vu' all over again" :bonk: )

OR what do you hate? Is there a word or Phrase that irritates you!?

"Does what it says on the tin..."

"At the end of the day, ..."

(Greeting ritual) "Alright?" "Yeeeeh. You?" "Yeeeeh."

Overuse of adverbs

"It's all gone Pete Tong."

"It's gone tits up/pear-shaped"

"chuft" and "knackered" are a few of the words I've picked up. There are so many and I can't think of them right now!

I say "chuff" for the female region below the waist, as in "She kicked her best mate in the chuff while they were fighting over a man."

I also use boot for trunk and bonnet for hood, mainly so Brits will know what I'm talking about.

I used to never describe any foodstuff as "foul" before I came to the UK, but now anything I don't like is "foul."

I hate anyone using the term 'chicken' as a term of endearment

..he he.. my SO would agree with you... she's not too impressed that I refer to her as poultry (NOT old bird I hasten to add)..

My favourite word so far that I picked up from you lot is lollygagging (translates as dawdling for English people)!

My husband uses "<whatever's> gone off". First time I heard that I thought he was mad. Now, I find myself saying it all the time - we were scrounging the fridge (at work) the day after a meeting and I exclaimed that the sandwiches had gone off. Now all my co-workers think that I've gone mad. ;)
