Social Security Card (SSN) & DHS Authorization due to long name

Hey all,

I just wanted to start a topic for those who are facing a similar issue. My fiance came to the U.S. on January 31st, and we went to the SSA immediately after he arrived (February 3rd) to apply for a SSN. On his SS application, we listed his entire name as it's displayed on his passport, however there were some discrepancies between his full name on his passport, the name on his K1 visa, and the name on his I-94 Arrival/Departure record. Basically, his name is a-b,c,d,e,f (a-b = hyphenated first name, c-e=3 middle names, f=last name). On his K1 visa, his name shows up as a-b,c,d,f. On his passport, it's a-b,c,d,e,f. On his i-94, it's a-b, c (only 4 characters from c), f.

When we went into the SSA, I used his full name shown on his passport to apply, but this didn't match up with the I-94 or his visa. Thus, our SS application was sent to DHS for additional verification. Originally, the agent told us it would only take a couple days for them to send back an electronic confirmation to the SSA, and after that, they would send the card. He gave us a letter which stated it may take up to 4 weeks, but he assured us it would be 2 weeks maximum. We have been checking on the status of the card since then by calling both our local SSA office and USCIS. Unfortunately, a USCIS supervisor told us that they had no information on the SSN even though the application was with them, and that there was no way for me to check the status. Every time I called my SS office, they said that DHS had everything and they couldn't give me any more information.

Today marks 2 weeks since our original application, so my fiance and I went back to the SSA (because we weren't able to get any answers on the phone), and another agent told us there was nothing they could do because the application was still with DHS, and all we could do was wait for them to get it back. She suggested we call the SSA every week and that I should receive a letter within the next two weeks (making it 4 weeks since my initial application). We are anxiously waiting for the card, but meanwhile, I just wanted to share our experience with everyone--perhaps others have faced something similar?

i say go back, do it again,

solely in I-94 record name, which should match up with visa name.

That I-94 record name will match up what's in the SAVE database, supposedly.

Alternatively, get into a CBP deferred inspection office, talk face to face with a shift supervisor, and get the I-94 record fixed there.

Unfortunately, the I-94 name does not match up with what's on the visa, as his middle name was cut off in the I-94. After reading this thread: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/583564-ssn-middle-name-confusion/, I feel better about waiting.
