Thanks for the replies. I work with a lot of Indian guys and they routinely have both parents visit for months at a time. I also know a filpino who I'm no longer in contact with and his mom came to visit even though I know for sure his mom is extremely poor and he is not a USC. How do they accomplish this? Thanks.

Oh, also my wife doesn't work. And her travel here would be paid by us and she'd stay with us so the total cost would be about $1000 for the plane ticket and she'd live here for free while visiting.

Their parents convinced the CO that they would return home after their trips.

It's not based on wealth or who is paying for the trip.

August 2000: We start e-mailing. I'm in Bosnia, she's in Florida

October 29th 2000: She sends me e-mail asking if I would marry her

October 29th 2000(5 seconds later): I say yes

November 2000: She sends me tickets to Orlando for when I get back

December 6th 2000: Return from Bos

December 11th 2000: Fly to Orlando, she meets me at airport

December 22nd 2000: I fly back to UK

January 3rd 2001: She flies to UK (Good times)

Mid February 2001: Pregnancy test Positive

Mid February 2001: She flies back to US

March 2001: Miscarriage, I fly to US on first flight I can get

May 2001: I leave US before my 90 days are up

June 2001: I fly back to US, stopped at airport for questioning as I had only just left

September 2001: Pregnancy test Positive again

September 2001: She falls sick, I make decision to stay to look after her as I am afraid I may have problems getting back in.

April 16th 2002: Our son is born, we start getting stuff together for his passport

March 6th 2003: We leave US for UK as family

Early April 2003: Family troubles make her return to US, I ask Embassy in London about possibilities of returning to US

April 16th 2003: London Embassy informs me that I will be banned from the Visa Waiver Program for 10 years, my little boys first birthday

June 13th 2006: I-129f sent

August 11th 2006: NOA1 Recieved

After our relationship breaks down she admits to me that she had never bothered to start the application process

Thank you all for your replies. My wife's parents have strong ties to their country as they have their own house and get their monthly retirement pension. My wife's sister has a full time job with a contract that renews every six months (it was just renewed this month).

So how much financial evidence is enough for the consulate to consider granting a tourist visa?

There is no specific sum....the CO must be convinced that the applicant will leave the US when it's time and not work without permission. It is common for a son or daughter or a SIL or DIL to 'pay the freight' for parents; mostly the COs want to be convinced that full time babysitting is not on the horizon nor that the parents will opt to camp out waiting for their son or daughter to gain citizenship. No amount of money in their account (parents) can really influence that decision. It will come down to what the CO believes, not what a bank statement says.

Does anyone know of a resource (web site, forum discussion thread, etc) that might help us navigate this? My mother in law will definitely return home - she's very active in the church there and her husband and 5 other kids will be there. But I'm not sure how to convince the CO of that and how to handle the application. Btw, will it be a visitor visa we'll apply for - like a tourism visa?

Read the post directly above yours from HFM181818. Search for others posts from this VJ member who is a former consular officer. That should give you some insight into the process.

The local Consulate web site has the information you need, a pretty simple process.

Your Friends "mom' might already have a 10 year tourist Visa that is not expired yet. Who knows ??

What they are doing is illegal....coming here on a visitor visa but then doing something else than "visiting"

Amen to what the former CO said.

There is no definite answer to your question. She will be either denied or approved.

The only way to know is apply, be honest and truthful on everything.

Goodluck !!

You are already in the right forum and resource.

Be optimistic and have her apply. Again, be honest and truthful and hopefully the CO will see that and approve her application.

Illegal if their purpose is not tourism but taking care of their Grandchildren....

There's no mention of taking care of grandchildren.

Ok let me re-phrase... If they are travelling via a Tourist Visa BUT main intent is to take care of Grand kids...then Illegal.

There you go.
