I saw 300 at the weekend, having liked (for all its historical inaccuracies) Frank Miller's graphic novel.

I knew I was in trouble when the credits started rolling and the 13 year old in the row in front of me whispered to his friends that it was a 'George Bush movie'.

The demonisation of the Persians goes way above anything in the graphic novel, and for all the stylised and quite attractive visuals it is probably the most racist movie since Zulu.

The stuff they added to flesh out the story and make it more 'relevant' essentially boils down to "shall we send more troops".

would you say it's worth buying on dvd?

It's probably worth buying for the visuals alone - Its not (at all) historically accurate, but you can't really fault that as its an adaptation of a comic. As far as the adaptation goes its almost spot on - the stuff they add to flesh out the story is a bit tedious. That and the fact that they reduce the "Persians" to darkling deviants (not too far removed from the Orc in LOTR) leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth.

ty, i'll put it on my list to buy.

i do think most stories from that time period though are questionable anyways in regards to historical accuracy.

This doesn't even try to be accurate - other than that there were some Spartans at Thermopylae. It buys into the mythology that the Spartans alone saved the free world. There's no mention of Salamis and Artemisium (2 big sea battles) that were pivotal and were brought about by the Athenians.

I had an oscar filmfest this past week to catch up on all the films I missed:

Last King of Scotland: Forest Whitaker is terrific but I felt cheated to learn after on the IMDB that James McAvoy's character is completely fictional.

Little Miss Sunshine: I liked this very much.

Half Nelson: a little bit on the dull side though the lead performances are terrific, especially little Shareeka Epps, who should have a fine career ahead of her.

Babel: I enjoyed this a lot though I wasn't sure if I would since I really didn't like 21 grams. The fact that the Mexican woman's story reminded me of the scene in Born in East LA when Cheech's family get deported to attend a wedding in Mexico kind of lessened the impact of her scenes I feel.

I saw this last night and was pretty disappointed. The entire story line set in Japan was superfluous IMO.

Fast Food Nation - failed to make an impact - although they did wind up showing the gore of the cows, which was disturbing. no mcdonald's/burger king/wendy's for me.

The Departed - enjoyed A LOT

Borat - saw in the theatre, bought the dvd now... didn't laugh nearly as much. the shock factor wasn't there, which is what you are basically laughing at.

I wasn't sure what to make of the Japanese story but I enjoyed it - the girl's performance was pretty compelling but I wasn't really sure how it fit in with the other 2.

Now when I see that actress on The TV I think of when she flashed her snatch. Not the best image.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
