hello, I am on L2 visa which allows me to work in USA with an EAD. My question is what should I start with, Should I apply for an EAD first or SSN first? because While applying for an EAD they are asking for my SSN and today when I went to apply for my SSN ,SSA said that without EAD I dont have a valid reason to apply for an SSN. I am confused with these contradicting answers. Please help

Also please let me know what are the valid non work reasons are there for me to apply ssn. Else I am not able to apply ssn. I am stuck out here . Please help.

You should apply for a SSN immediately, first.

Some valid non- work reasons for having a SSN:

1. To open a bank account or credit card.

2. For some major utility services: Gas, electric, water

3. To buy a home (get a mortgage).

4. For any other type of loan besides a mortage.

5. For Health Insurance/Medical Services

6. Some landlords require it to rent their apartments/condos.

7. College/Universities require it to study there.

In essence, your SSN is more than a card that allows a way for the government to tax your wages, it's also your personal identification number attached to your life in the USA.

you don't need SS# to apply for EAD, the form asks for it but if you do not have one you just say NONE.

L2 is a legal alien not allowed to work. >https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530 You would need an EAD first, before you could apply for an SSN. Having an EAD would make you a legal alien allowed to work. You do not need an SSN to apply for an EAD. You just leave the SSN question blank.
