"A former CO's" words aren't necessarily golden.

I did say in select instances.

I speak from experience.

I'd say they are more golden in comparison to a "never-been-a-CO" telling us otherwise. :D

In select instances, such a letter could prove helpful.

Not according to a former CO on this site

I'd say they are more golden in comparison to a "never-been-a-CO" telling us otherwise. :D

I don't disagree..

:) however, I was specifically responding to the above poster's particular post :)

about ten years ago my wifes niece wanted to come visit us in the USA. She had just graduated from college and wanted to get away from Rio for awhile. At my wifes insistence i wrote such a letter. Needless to say her visa petition was denied. 22 years old no job no reason to return. Consular officers ignored the letter. she ended up going to London and stayed six months or so working under the table.

as seen from the above, an invitation letter cannot prevent someone from working illegally in the US...our CO was right in denying her application. Invitation letters are worthless insofar as overcoming 214b, insofar as 'guaranteeing' that the applicant will depart the US and not take up 'under the table' employment while in the US as a tourist.....it does not matter one iota who writes an invitation letter....anyone's 'word' will not be accepted, no matter what your pedigree.

In the boat as most of you, wife's relatives are hard working good people, can't get a visa to come here, because they are not super rich.

No problem with those 9/11 terrorists coming here, had plenty of cash, just as one terrible example.

Feel the key problem is no enforcement on that I-94 that you are issued when a non-immigrant person comes here, the key reason for all those undocumented people living here, not politically correct to call them illegals anymore. But know for a fact they can check this, sure can if you apply for a green card. If they found out you overstayed your visa, can deport you for ten years.

So what do our politicians do to correct this? Just make it next to impossible for your loved ones to get a visa, and least for us, a cover letter more than likely did more damage than good.

But not all is lost, we still can visit them, least for now, no telling what will happen tomorrow.

When things got real tough for us to visit my wife's son stuck in Venezuela, we got him a plane ticket to meet us in Italy, Was fun and a great visit, least Italy would take both of us without visas. But can forget about bringing him to our home in the USA.

There is a thread going on about a lady from Columbia, tried for a Visitor Visa denied, came on a K1 and went AWOL.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
